We Got This Covered started as a WordPress hosted blog known as We Got It Covered. Founded by three Toronto based university students (Matt Joseph, Avi Rothschild and Ray Abramson) as a place to blog for fun, the site slowly expanded when a couple of friends expressed interest in writing for it. After a week or two, Matt, Avi and Ray decided it was time to get their own domain and on June 28, 2010 We Got This Covered was born.
We Got This Covered started as a place to write about film. But, as more and more of our friends came on board, people wanted the freedom to write about more than just film. And so, we started covering sports, music, videogames etc.
At first, there were really no plans to take it past just a small blog. Individuals in our group of friends would contribute here and there, posting on topics that interested them. It was really supposed to be just something for our friends and for the people we knew.
During the summer though, the site started to grow a bit and it slowly started to expand past just our circle of friends. It started to reach past only those that we knew. In September 2010, with everyone returning to school, the site was almost shut down. School work threatened to get in the way and so, the owners almost pulled the plug.
But, when push came to shove, they just couldn’t do it. Instead, they went the opposite direction. They decided that if the site were to stay open during the school year then it would have to become something real. Not just a site where a group of friends randomly blog, it would have to become a full fledged website.
And so, external staff were hired, ad networks were contacted, bigger server space was purchased, more elegant themes were coded and stricter guidelines were put into place. Over the years, Avi and Ray have since moved on but Matt continues to run the site, along with numerous writers that he’s brought on board.
As of August 2012, the time of this writing, We Got This Covered is a well established website with millions of visitors every month from countries all over the world. To date, we’ve had over 7 million visitors from over 230 countries. The site has become bigger than any of its founders had ever imagined, but as long as you the reader keeps coming back, we the staff will keep producing content!
