Even though it may slip your mind from time to time, the fact of the matter is that the Rebirth era has been home to two Scarlet Speedsters. In the pages of The Flash, we have Barry Allen serving as the titular hero, while the pre-Flashpoint Wally West is running around over in Titans, also sharing that very moniker. And before we proceed any further, please note that he’s not the younger Wally who’s operating under the name of “Kid Flash” in other titles. Yes, comic books can be confusing.
Anyway, it looks like we could see a shift in status quo next year, all thanks to an upcoming story arc titled “Flash War.” Spinning out of the events of Dark Nights: Metal, it’ll see Barry and Wally settle who’s the better Flash once and for all. Set to be written by Joshua Williamson, with art by Christian Duce and covers by Howard Porter, we can only imagine what the outcome may be.
Right now, not much is known about the plot itself, but it has been confirmed that the story will kickoff in the pages of The Flash Annual #1, which is slated to arrive in comic shops on January 31, 2018, before concluding in The Flash #46. And regardless of us all being somewhat in the dark right now, we can’t help but think “Flash War” may very well be the biggest thing Williamson has written involving these characters – and this is the same guy who created Godspeed and co-authored The Button, mind you.
In the meantime, DC has circulated a piece of promo art showing Wally West holding two different costumes. Just by looking at it, you’d think that he’ll emerge as The Flash coming out of this event, but you never know. Sure, Barry may headline the TV series, but that doesn’t mean it has to dictate what’s happening in the comics.
