DC Rebirth’s 9 Best Moments So Far

It's been over a year now since Rebirth was born (see what I did there?). In that time, we've seen DC do a full tilt and bring back the good times to their popular superheroes and series. You see, despite what the Internet will have you believe, the New 52 wasn't all that bad - it just didn't feel like a DC event (except for Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's marvelous Batman run). Now, after a host of classic issues and gargantuan events, we've decided to look back at some of the highlights of this relaunch. Trust us, it was far from easy to select the best of the lot because of the sheer number of them. From the return of popular characters to the tying up of loose ends prior to Flashpoint, it's been a wild ride, with only more to come. There have been a ton of good ones, so we're sure you'll have your own opinion on which are the best here. With all the formalities out of the way, bring out the balloons and throw the confetti, as we celebrate Rebirth's best moments to date. Batman Pops The Big Question Despite being the ultimate badass in everything he does, the Dark Knight hasn't been so lucky in the love department. A Mrs. Wayne has always seemed like a foreign concept to poor old Bruce - that is until Batman #24. While the issue might be a bit too sappy for most ardent fans, the reveal at the end is a big one, which makes it unforgettable. Finally, after decades of a cat-and-bat game, Bruce goes down on one knee and asks Selina Kyle (Catwoman) to be his wife. And of course the Bat-Signal has to be in the background to make sure this will be a popular wallpaper and poster for Caped Crusader fans. The Bat and the Cat have been bumping uglies for years now, so it's good to see them make each other honest for a change. Whether the actual wedding takes place or not is another story altogether. It's entirely possible this could turn into a soapie romance where they get married thirty-three times and their children age faster than them. Two Supermen Become One If you're a Man of Steel fan, we don't blame you for being confused when Rebirth rolled out. First, there were two Supermen, then one died, and then another appeared. Huh? We wouldn't be surprised if you thought it was some clone saga or whatever, because it sure appeared like one. While not all the mysteries have been solved to date, the moment when the two Supermen of different worlds become one in Action Comics #976 stands out as a powerful image in Rebirth. Considering how it's Jon Kent's influence that leads to it, it's even more resonating and remarkable. Let's be honest here: the little tyke has grown on us a lot over the past year. On a separate but related note, Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason have written up a storm on Superman, dishing up a plethora of iconic stories and memories. With two Supes' titles providing such enviable quality, it's a good time to be a supporter of Big Blue and co. Damian Wayne Is The Future Ra's Al Ghul While Action Comics receives the accolades and praise, Dan Jurgens is also doing a phenomenal job on Batman Beyond. Not only has he brought Bruce Wayne and the Joker back from the dead in his latest run, but he's also revealed the new Ra's al Ghul of that timeline to be Damian Wayne. It's no stretch of the imagination to see Damian take over the Demon's Head mantle since he does have questionable morals and a tainted bloodline, but it's ballsy to see how wicked he is here. If you think the current Ra's is a rotten apple, then wait until you see what Damian has done. For one, he actually used the Batman Beyond suit to do some real damage, i.e. commit murder, when he was still on talking terms with daddy dearest. Whether the younger Wayne sees the error of his ways and redeems himself is another arc for the future. Nonetheless, watching Damian go down the dark side should please current admirers of the little jerk. Mera Joins The Justice League One thing that Rebirth has failed to do is give us a good Justice League run. Sadly, the title has been incredibly mediocre from the start, but there are signs that it might be on the up now. The first of these is Mera joining the League in Justice League #24. As Aquaman deals with the fallout of him being dethroned as the King of Atlantis, Mera encounters (and bests) the Justice League in combat. Realizing her awe-inspiring power, the senior members quickly move to add her to their ranks, rather than have her as an adversary and kicking their butts. Incorporating a popular character like Mera into the League is a good move in the long run. Not only are there new Green Lanterns on the team, but there's also a new Atlantean. This should freshen up the group and hopefully inspire better storytelling in the issues to come. The Joker Is Alive And Well…In The Batcave We've had several teases of the Joker throughout Rebirth, but the mystery of where he has been hiding all this time was finally revealed in Dark Days: The Forge #1. Yes, people, Batman had the critter locked up in his Batcave. Why would he do something so insane and dangerous? Because he's the damn Batman and he can do whatever the hell he wants! In the Dark Days prequels, we find out more about the Joker and his involvement in the Dark Knight's latest escapades with the Nth metal. There have been some shocking reveals so far, but none quite like us finding out that the Clown Prince of Crime was hiding right there in plain sight. We hope that the Bat at least gave him some lotion for his skin… Now that the fiend has escaped from the cave, though, he's free to cause new and wondrous havoc in Gotham City again. Still, his first "official" appearance in Rebirth was a stunner and one that likely won't be forgotten for a long time. Robin Throws Shade At Marvel Ever since Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, Marvel Comics hasn't been shy at poking fun at DC's less-than-critically-acclaimed superhero film in its books. While it was funny maybe the first time round, it's gotten a little bit too much in recent times. We get it: the Martha thing is funny to you, Marvel. Naturally, we've waited for DC to retort and it came from the most unlikely of sources: Damian Wayne (Robin). In Teen Titans #9, Damian hands Jackson Hyde (Aqualad) a pair of hilts for him to concentrate water blades on. Jackson compares them to Dumbo's magic feather, but Damian is left confused by the comparison. When Jackson explains it further, Damian replies sharply, "I don't speak Disney." Indeed, it's only a playful, subtle jab at Marvel, since Disney is its parent company. Even so, while it's not an outright assault on DC's competitor, it's at least nice to see that they're not taking the shameless digs lying down anymore. Zod Burns A Bomb Out Of His Brain In arguably the biggest WTF moment of Rebirth so far, General Zod burns a bomb out of his brain in Suicide Squad #17. It's completely nuts, but absolutely perfect for the nature of the title and character. So, get this: Amanda Waller captures General Zod and thinks she can actually make him join the Squad by planting a bomb in his brain like all the other members. Are you done laughing now? Well, the Kryptonian is having none of it and uses a mirror to burn the bomb out of his brain, sticking it to Waller and all other earthlings in the process. HE. BURNS. IT. OUT. OF. HIS. BRAIN. Weirdly enough, this is a very Zod-like thing to do, so when he does do it, you can't really be all too surprised. Still, how painful must it be using laser vision on your brain? Ouch. Bruce Wayne Meets Thomas Wayne It was the moment that we'd been waiting for since "The Button" had first been teased. The modern-day Batman, AKA Bruce Wayne, meeting Flashpoint Batman, AKA his father Thomas. While the actual storyline ended up being far from remarkable and didn't really address anything, the Waynes' first encounter in The Flash #21 certainly did make your heart stop for a second. By the time when Batman #22 dropped, we finally got to see father and son have a heart-to-heart conversation and team up for the first time. While it would've been nice to see a more extended arc where they could've shared more time together, it must be said that there was indeed some closure for Bruce and Thomas here. So, all in all, it served its purpose. Seeing them together is a scene that truly hits you in the feels. In fact, it's the second-best emotional moment in Rebirth. The first belongs to… Barry Allen Remembers Wally West One of the biggest downsides of Flashpoint and the New 52 is how it removed Wally West from existence (well, the original ginger-haired Wally). It burned a hole in the hearts of Flash fans everywhere and no one could understand why such a beloved character would be wiped away from continuity. Step in DC Universe: Rebirth #1 to make amends. Right off the bat, it brings back one of our favorite speedsters and explains where he fits into the whole scheme of things. Not just that, but it reunites Wally with his friend and mentor, Barry Allen, in a major climax. When Barry finally remembers him and they embrace, it's one of the most emotional scenes in comic book history. We've seen buttons, battles, and broken spirits, but nothing compares to Barry and Wally's heartfelt reunion in that standalone special.
