Following up on Monday’s grand, albeit not too surprising announcement, NetherRealm Studios — the company behind DC’s reputable fighter, Injustice: Gods Among Us — has unveiled pre-order options and official box art for its upcoming reboot-cum-sequel, Mortal Kombat X.

As one would expect, the game’s box is occupied by series stalwart Scorpion, who has garnered a reputation as one of the most divisive characters in Mortal Kombat’s eclectic roster. However, in bringing the game to this most recent generation of consoles, series co-creator and all-round fighting game guru, Ed Boon, spoke of his excitement for Mortal Kombat X:

“Mortal Kombat has always been about over-the-top, visceral fighting and with Mortal Kombat X we wanted to utilize the power of new-gen consoles to give players our most intense game yet. The team has worked hard to make sure Mortal Kombat X delivers everything fans expect along with new characters, new game modes and an all new graphics engine.”

Though enhanced fidelity is one of the most notable assets of transitioning the franchise to new hardware — as the recent launch trailer attests — NetherRealm Studios also hinted at the game’s online features, which are said to introduce players into a persistent battle arena where every punch, kick and gruesome dismemberment counts.

And while Mortal Kombat X will usher in a series of new features and challenges, the hyper-kinect beat ‘em up is said to include an original story that orbits around renowned characters such as Scorpion and Sub-Zero.

Mortal Kombat X is set to make its first public appearance next week during E3, where it will be dragged kicking and screaming onto the stage, no doubt. As for a release date, NetherRealm confirmed that the game will launch across Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4, PS3 and PC sometime in 2015.
