Earlier this week the gaming magazine Famitsu revealed Capcom’s plans to launch the Capcom Arcade Cabinet — a downloadable XBLA and PSN app that serves as a portal for the publisher’s classic arcade titles — in Japan. Capcom has since confirmed that the service will also see a Western release, however, they declined to reveal any information about price, release date, or what games will be available for purchase at launch.

The company promised that a more informative debut will take place on February 7th, however, if the service is similar to its Japanese counterpart then we already have a decent idea of how it will work. The actual Capcom Arcade Cabinet app will more than likely be free to download, and come with the 1987 side-scrolling action game Black Tiger.

Speaking to Polygon, Capcom producer Kenji Kataoka revealed the extent to which the publisher is going to remain faithful to the original arcade titles, saying:

“I can’t go into details on titles yet but we’re definitely focusing on the games that came out earlier on in our history. These are completely faithful reproductions, too. You used to have arcade games ported to the NES and such and wind up being completely different titles on that platform, but that’s not the case here. Even if there were bugs in the original, we’ve kept them in there if we felt we needed to in order to retain the original feel of the game.”

Outside of just providing the actual arcade ports, Capcom Arcade Cabinet will also allow players to adjust the difficulty of games, change attack strength, and mess with the collision detection range by using “several modes” within each title.

Kataoka also revealed that Capcom is still “debating” how the arcade titles will be distributed on the service, but hinted that games might be sold in “packs” for “really surprisingly cheap prices”.

For now it looks like we will have to wait for February 7th to get the full scoop on Capcom Arcade Cabinet. In the meantime let us know which titles you are hoping to see hit the service in the comments below.
