Though the base title featured colossal battles set on alien worlds, Civilization: Beyond Earth‘s maiden expansion, Rising Tide, will shift the action into the oceans.

Due to release on PC this fall, publisher 2K formally unveiled the add-on earlier today, which will introduce new factions, an “overhauled diplomacy system,” and much more. It will be available for $30 and Firaxis confirmed plans to port the upcoming expansion to Mac and Linux shortly after launch. Focusing primarily on maritime gameplay, with players coming up against hoards of alien beasts and leviathans, Rising Tide will allow budding explorers to assume control of one of four factions.

Here’s the official word from 2K on those new-fangled features.

  • Build floating settlements and access natural resources hidden beneath the seas of the alien planet.
  • Shape the diplomatic landscape by upgrading traits, changing diplomatic relationships, and leveraging the benefits of your allies.
  • Play as one of four new factions, including the Al Falah, a group of nomad explorers descended from wealthy and resilient Middle Eastern states.
  • And much, much more – see below for additional details.

Those eager to learn more about Rising Tide should head over to Firaxis’ official Twitch channel at 11am PST/2pm EST, where the developer plans to host an informative breakdown of this announcement.

2K has teased fans of the long-running real-time strategy series that the publisher will involve much more information relating to Civilization: Beyond Earth‘s Rising Tide expansion – including our first look at gameplay – during E3. Stay tuned for more.
