Dead Island: Riptide, the upcoming title spinning off from last year’s hit open-world zombie game, has had hints of a completely new playable character dropped via its official web site.

Sebastian Reichert, a director at publisher Deep Silver, confirmed the inclusion, along with dropping hints that the game will carry an overall darker tone. Reichert gave further details: “Palanai is an island full of natural beauty, for example, wonderful waterfalls, contrasted by natural destruction caused by storms, monsoons and rain. And of course the zombies.”

Other new features will include boat and flooding gameplay systems, a new program that rewards specific stat upgrades based on the players’ weapons of choice.

Dead Island: Riptide is currently scheduled for a 2013 release on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and the PC. We will keep you updated as more details drop.
