When 2013 began, Nintendo dubbed it “The Year Of Luigi” and promised that we would receive more titles starring Mario’s brother. We have already seen Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, New Super Luigi U, and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, but the Big N had one more surprise up their sleeve. Announced during today’s Nintendo Direct, Dr. Luigi promises to give us a new take on a classic title.

Receiving its cues from Dr. Mario, Dr. Luigi has players lining up color coded pills in order to destroy an assortment of viruses. Even if you haven’t played the original title, odds are you have played something very similar. Since Luigi is his own man though, there are going to be a few new wrinkles in the classic formula. The Operation L mode will feature pills that are L-shaped, which is essentially just a fancy way of saying two pills stuck together. While this mode will require gamers to match four colors together, Nintendo chief Satoru Iwata says that it will be much easier than the traditional mode.

In addition to the Operation L, Dr. Luigi will also come with a few other new features. Online play will pit gamers against each other in gameplay that seems inspired by Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo. The new Germ Fighter option presents a simpler way of playing, as you can use the Wii U’s touch screen in order to position capsules properly. If none of those are up your alley, the title also includes a traditional version of Dr. Mario for you to enjoy.

Dr. Luigi will be available for the Wii U via the eShop on December 31st for $14.99. While you wait with baited breath for the release, why not take a glimpse at the trailer below and let us know what you think in the comments section.
