Nintendo announced today during their E3 2013 Nintendo Direct presentation that the new 3D Mario game for the Wii U is titled Super Mario 3D World, and will launch worldwide in December 2013.

EAD Tokyo is developing Super Mario 3D World, and they have clearly used their 3DS Mario (Super Mario 3D Land) and the North American version of the NES classic Super Mario 2 as inspiration.

The game is designed for four players, who can pick from using Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Toad. Much like the old Super Mario Bros. 2, the characters in 3D World will each control in different ways. For example, Peach can hover for short distances, Toad is faster than the other three characters, and Luigi has a higher and longer jump.

Nintendo also revealed that Mario and his friends will be able to use an all-new costume, the Cat Suit. When Mario (or the other characters) get a gold bell they will transform into the Cat Suit and gain the ability to climb up walls, scratch enemies, and scale up end level flag poles.

We will update this post with the first screenshots and trailer for Super Mario 3D World as soon as they are released.
