D3Publisher announced this week that Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable will be released for the PlayStation Vita in North America sometime this winter. As part of the announcement the publisher detailed some of the additions that will separate this game from the original 2007 title.

The biggest difference is that EDF 2017 Portable will have an online component that will allow up to four players to compete in a PvP mode or co-op. Several new weapons and tools that “specialize in cooperative gameplay” have also been added to the game, and players will be able to chat with each other in all the multiplayer modes.

Additionally, EDF 2017 Portable will have an unlockable playable character named Pale Wing that was not part of the original game. Pale Wing is a female character who has her own set of gear and the ability to fly, which will require players to use a whole new set of strategies during gameplay. Once Pale Wing is unlocked all four players in multiplayer will be able to select her and form a “Pale Wing Unit”.

Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable will also include all-new missions and enemies to further expand upon the original game, however, D3Publisher has not yet detailed exactly how much additional content there is.

Once a more specific release date for EDF 2017 Portable is announced we will let you know, until then make sure to check out the new screenshots of the Vita game in our gallery below.
