Nordic Games and Piranha Bytes – the creative minds behind Gothic and the Risen RPG series – have blown off the lid on their all-new IP, ELEX.

Blending seemingly every trope under the one pixelated umbrella, the studio’s open-world title has been described as a sprawling sci-fi experience where players can explore a vast and seamless world. Expect moral choices aplenty when ELEX arrives on the scene; though it’ll be some time yet before Piranha Bytes brings its game to PC and current-gen consoles, as the studio has pegged it for a release in late 2016/early 2017.

To sate our appetite – or indeed pique or interest – Piranha has unveiled a single piece of concept art and the following synopsis.

ELEX is a handcrafted action role-playing experience from the award-winning creators of the Gothic series, set in a brand new post-apocalyptic science fantasy universe that puts players into a huge, seamless game world full of original characters, mutated creatures, deep moral choices and powerful action.

It’s a completely fresh take for both parties, and according to a statement released in tandem with today’s announcement, ELEX is far and away the “most ambitious project for Piranha Bytes and Nordic Games to date.”

ELEX is still a ways away from release now that Nordic Games and Piranha Bytes have slated it for a release in late 2016/early 2017 – which begs the question as to why it was announced so early in the first place – though it’s understood visitors to Gamescom in Cologne can catch an early build of the new IP.
