Exclusive Interview: Pawel Miechowsk Talks This War Of Mine: The Little Ones

Warsaw, Poland's 11bitstudios recently brought their PC and iOS hit This War of Mine to consoles. The new version of the intense strategy game, which is called This War Of Mine: The Little Ones, shows the Siege of Sarajevo in a new light. War is rarely seen through the eyes of children, and yet this is what the game replicates.

WGTC: Besides the controls, have you had to tweak anything about This War of Mine to get it working on consoles from either a technical or gameplay perspective?

PM: From the gameplay perspective, we had to balance all the new mechanics, but it looked different from how we were used to. We didn’t re-balance the entire game – it looked like the basic one. Instead, we had to properly design and balance new mechanics to make new content close to reality. We wanted children to behave like children and see world from their perspective. For example – kids react very strongly to what happens to other people in the shelter, they’re strongly emotionally attached to other people.

WGTC: Will the new content found in the console version ever come to PC?

PM: Yes, we would like to do that, but that requires time and some decisions. So the current status is TBD, but we want to do that. S

WGTC: How excited are you that a whole new audience will get to experience the studios’ breakthrough hit?

PM: TWoM is very popular, so we’ve seen a big interest from console gamers and got a ton of feedback to bring it to consoles. We felt the responsibility. So we’re all incredibly happy to hear that gamers are approving what we’ve made. I think it was a challenge to communicate to a whole new audience that you may experience a really sad story, but it’s engaging and worth your time. But so far the feedback is fantastic.

WGTC: Give us your best pitch as to why gamers should check out This War of Mine: The Little Ones!

PM: See war from [the] perspective of civilians and become the narrator of your own story about a group of kids and adults trying to survive the siege of a city.

That concludes our interview, but we’d like to give a big thank you to Pawel Miechowsk for taking the time to speak with us. More information on This War of Mine can be found on the game’s official twitter page – @ThisWarOfMine.
