After months of anticipation, Microsoft has officially announced that the HBO Go app is now available on the Xbox One. This marks the first time that the popular streaming service has been available on a current-gen console, although a PlayStation 4 release is planned for the future.

As is the case with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the service, Xbox One owners will need to have a cable or satellite TV subscription in order to use HBO Go. A standalone version of the service is currently in the works as well, but is not expected to launch in the United States until sometime next year.

Much like similar apps on the Xbox One, HBO Go features full Kinect voice and gesture control. So now, instead of having to use a controller to access the latest episodes of hit programs such as Game of Thrones or True Detective, you can just use a quick gesture to pick what you want.

Although there are a handful of ways to access HBO Go these days, that doesn’t mean this isn’t a good get for Microsoft and the Xbox One. The premium cable channel not only currently airs some of the best programs on television, but is also home to groundbreaking hits such as The Sopranos and The Wire. If Microsoft wants their console to be a true all-in-one media device, then it needs apps such as this.
