Setting up the fall of an icon, The Phantom Pain will fill in a missing chapter in Metal Gear Solid lore; that is, Big Boss’ decision to defect from FOXHOUND and his country. Set in the aftermath of Peace Walker and just prior to 1987’s Metal Gear for the MSX, Kojima’s heavy-hitter will introduce us to a grizzled, world-weary version of Big Boss, who struggles to keep a grip on the sprawling network of lies and deceit that threatens to instigate a nuclear war between the governing forces of the world.

In today’s new video, we’re treated to a montage of MGS‘ greatest moments, from its idiosyncratic quirks – cardboard boxes and alligator hats – to the serious themes of political corruption and nuclear war that underpin all canonical entries into Konami’s series. Come September 1, Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain will bring an end to Kojima’s tenure at the helm of the franchise – once that stretches back almost 30 years. From what we understand, the game director himself is currently piecing together an English language clip, which is likely to be the game’s launch trailer.

At long last, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will touch down on September 1, 2015 for PS4, Xbox One and PC. Metal Gear Online, meanwhile, has been held back until October 6 on consoles.
