After an extended layoff, Square Enix is reviving the Legacy of Kain franchise with a new entry entitled Nosgoth. Unlike its predecessors though, Nosgoth will not be a single player affair and instead will be a free-to-play multiplayer title.
Developed by Psyonix, Nosgoth centers around the war between humans and vampires. Players will be able to choose which side they want to represent and each side has their own advantages. Humans have superior technology and stealth, while vampires have more brute strength and super abilities such as flight. Basically it seems to come down to whether you would prefer the long distance attacks of the humans or the up-close, head ripping ability of the vampires.
As a fan of the Legacy of Kain franchise, this isn’t really what I expected when rumors began to fly that the long dormant series was going to be revived. After all, the franchise was known for its intricate story and deep mythology and not the clunky combat that I remember so well from Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen 2. So Square Enix’s decision to mostly focus on combat and not storytelling has me just a little worried.
All in all, this seems like a rather baffling decision from the company. Gamers who wanted another entry in the Legacy of Kain franchise probably wanted something featuring either Raziel or Kain, the main characters from the earlier entries in the series. Right now, Nosgoth reminds me a little of 2012’s Batman spin-off Gotham City Impostors. Not just in the sense that both titles focus on clan battles, but also the fact that I have no idea who the intended audience is.
Nosgoth is currently only scheduled for release on PC and if you are interested in the title, you can register for the beta now. We will have more information on the title as it becomes available.
