Though we’ve had some solid looks at the gameplay of Thief in previous trailers, this past weekend’s VGX show saw the debut of a new video, and it revealed some crucial plot details. Death! The Occult! Mysterious Creatures! Eidos Montreal has packed quite a bit of new information into one small tease.

If you recall the original Thief games, you may remember Garrett taking on a young apprentice at the conclusion of Thief: Deadly Shadows. At the start of this trailer we see Garrett and his apprentice, Erin, spying on what appears to be a cult meeting. I’m not sure what they’re planning on stealing from a bunch of old men in robes, but I digress. During the ceremony, the cult summons some type of mystical force, which inadvertently leads to Erin falling through the ceiling and dying.

Aside from some ominous warnings from other characters and the brief glimpse of a mysterious creature, we’re still not exactly sure what type of chaos said summoning is causing. However, as these things tend to go, it will be up to Garrett to save the city he loves in order to steal from and ultimately avenge his apprentice.

I know the original three games had elements of the supernatural in them, but I honestly wasn’t expecting it to play such a huge role here. Most of the information released for Thief thus far seemed to focus solely on the idea of stealing from the rich and overthrowing a vicious tyrant. I guess Garrett will have to deal with the antagonists from the first Sherlock Holmes film now as well.

Thief is currently scheduled to be released on February 25, 2014 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Windows PC. We will continue to have coverage of the reboot leading up to its release.

Are you excited about seeing the supernatural playing a bigger role here? Let us know in the comments section below.
