Although we knew that it was scheduled for release sometime in May, we now know exactly when Wii U-exclusive Splatoon will launch.

During Nintendo’s Direct livestream — which was broadcast earlier today — the company announced that it plans to splatter digital and retail store shelves with paint on May 29th, with the anticipated release of Splatoon. The news didn’t stop there, though, as more details emerged regarding the new IP, including talk of themed amiibo figures that will launch alongside the game.

Also revealed during the stream, was the fact that Splatoon will incorporate a Ranked Battles mode, which will match players based on their performances in standard 4-vs-4 multiplayer games. This will be complemented by a 1-vs-1 Battle Dojo, that will allow two local players to challenge each other. While one person uses a separate controller and plays off of the TV, the other will utilize the GamePad, in an attempt to see who can pop the most balloons.

Needless to say, there’s a lot to look forward to with regards to Splatoon. Furthermore, what we played at E3 was a heck of a lot of fun, and a definite show highlight, so I’d be lying if I said that it wasn’t one of my most-anticipated titles.
