PlayStation 4 is about to welcome one of the biggest MMOs in the world in the form of PlanetSide 2, with Sony and developer Daybreak Game Company confirming plans to release the console version on June 23 in North America. Budding soldiers won’t need a PlayStation Plus subscription to play online either, given the fact that the colossal shooter is free-to-play.

In tandem with today’s announcement, the game’s official Twitter account added that a whole raft of beta keys will be released today as the company puts the final sheen of polish prior to launch.

For the uninitiated, PlanetSide 2 takes place across a huge open-world setting where territorial control is paramount, with players assuming control of one of six different classes. We weren’t joking about the size and scope, after Daybreak’s title recently broke the Guinness World Record for the Most Players in a Single First-Person Game, with a staggering 1,158 individuals.

Sony describes PlanetSide 2 as so:

“revolutionary, massive scale, first-person shooter where soldiers battle as one in strategic, targeted missions against enemy Empires in an all-out planetary war. Massive communities with unwavering camaraderie band together in PlanetSide 2 as the game challenges the skill and grit of the most seasoned soldier through intense infantry, air, and ground vehicle gameplay. Victory requires teamwork and a quick trigger finger to survive the enormous battles.”

PlanetSide 2 will touch down on PlayStation 4 in North America and Europe on June 23.
