Just days before the Electronic Entertainment Expo is set to begin, Electronic Arts Canada has detailed the modes, major gameplay tweaks and additional features that will find their way into NHL 17 when it’s released later this year.

Let’s start with the gameplay, where it’s been promised that a brand new Net Battle system will allow players to battle for the limited space that surrounds each team’s net. Goaltenders’ IQ and AI will also be updated, to allow for more realistic saves as part of the aptly-titled Reactionary Save Intelligence system. Plus, as is expected, tweaks have been made to players’ skating, hitting, passing and puck pick-up abilities, which should allow for a more authentic experience.

Going forward, there will be a new set of goal celebrations to show off with in NHL 17, as well as three additional modes to enjoy. The list begins with Franchise Mode, which takes Be a GM and turns it into a more complete offering, wherein you listen only to the team’s owner and get to control every facet of the business, from concession prices to promotional nights. Next up is Draft Champions, which promises a fun drafting experience with rounds of superstar picks, although why it’s noteworthy evades me at this time. Last but not least, there’s the World Cup mode, which is based upon the NHL’s global, winner takes all tournament, that is coming to Toronto in September.

That’s not all, though, as EASHL has also been updated with a new player rank system, which will allow the hardcore to play their way towards unique items and customization features for their player, their team and their arena. This includes new logos, colours and patches, as well as an all-new arena creation suite, which will also be available for use within Franchise Mode.

NHL 17 will be released sometime this fall, for both Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Those who can’t wait should take note that its cover athlete and first gameplay reveal will occur during the upcoming NHL Awards, which will be held in Las Vegas on June 22nd.
