New figures released by Sony during the company’s investor relations report yesterday have revealed a massive amount of growth for their PlayStation Plus subscriber service, which has seen the number of members almost double to 20.8m users since January of last year.
Other milestones touched upon in the report include the reiteration that the PlayStation 4 has now sold over 40 million units through to consumers and that the Japanese company intends to invest more resources into its PlayStation Vue and PlayStation VR products, as well as its new partnership with Kojima Productions.
So, how do these new numbers stack up to the competition? As stated by VideoGamer, the most recent figures made public by Microsoft puts Xbox Live’s monthly active users at around 46 million, but includes both free and paid Xbox Live users, rather than just Xbox Live Gold – the equivalent of PlayStation Plus.
Interestingly, the report states that one of the key investments for future growth is to “expand PS VR ecosystem to non-game business.” Could we be seeing the fledgling technology being integrated with various third-party apps like Netflix and Twitch in the future? It’s certainly possible.
