The Year Of Luigi Continues: Plumber Announced For Super Smash Bros. Wii U, 3DS

Having appeared in every version of the Super Smash Bros. series thus far, it was hardly surprising when Satoru Iwata confirmed the return of everyone’s other favourite Mario Brother to the fighting foray. Still, with Luigi now on the bill, the game’s confirmed roster has expanded to fourteen playable characters.

These include: Mario, Luigi, Link, Pikachu, Bowser, Kirby, Samus, Captain Olimar, Pit, Donkey Kong, Fox, Mega Man, Villager and the Wii Fit Trainer, with the latter three representing the series’ newcomers.

Throwing his name into Super Smash Bros.’ figurative hat rounds off an impressive year for Luigi, having already appeared in three games during the course of 2013. This trio includes Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, his ghost-busting turn in Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon and the New Super Luigi U expansion pack.

Returning to the deliriously addicting realm of Super Smash Bros., however, and it seems as though Luigi’s inclusion wasn’t the only snippet Nintendo intended to unveil. The industry giant also lifted the curtain on a new stage inspired by the classic Pilotwings game – which originally launched back in 1990 for the SNES. First spotted on the game’s official website, the snap is an aerial photo of the title’s well-known island. Considering that Masahiro Sakurai – Super Smash Bros.’ founding father – attached “Pic of the day. This island looks familiar!” to the image when he uploaded it to Miiverse, it seems highly likely that players will be using the idyllic isle as a roaring battleground very soon indeed. Here’s the aforementioned picture in full:

There is no specific release date to report on at this time, all we know for sure is that the game will release sometime in 2014 for both the Wii U and 3DS. While it’s understood that Super Smash Bros will contain a restricted character roster due to lack of development time, let us know which character you’re willing to champion in the comments below.
