If you’ve ever wondered if it’s possible to engage in tank warfare on the open sea, you’ll probably want to be playing World Of Tanks this weekend. As part of a special one-off event being held for the hugely-popular game, players will be given a free, modified version of the TOG II tank with which to wage war not on land, but water.

Wargaming’s executive producer and and creative director TJ Wagner had the following to say of the wacky new game mode on Sony’s PlayStation blog.

Hi Tankers! TJ here with an all-new game mode to try out on PS4 this weekend only. If you haven’t played World of Tanks — download the game today, it’s free with no PlayStation Plus account needed.

Although we frequently develop one-off events and game modes, we are doing something we have never done before in World of Tanks on any platform; we are launching tanks onto the water and heading to sea! For this weekend only, take one of the most well-known and loved armored vehicles in the game to the seas in the newest specialty game mode for World of Tanks: TOG Boat.

Wagner says the idea arose from the fact that the TOG II has been affectionately referred to as The Boat for years, and that the fun new mini-event is a way for the development team to give a little something back to the community. Making tanks sail on water to blow each other up is the best way to do that, apparently.

Wagner also says that creating the maps for the event was simple enough – they borrowed a bunch of assets from Wargaming’s World Of Warships, for which the event is also a nod to.

World Of Tanks is available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC and is free to download. Additional experience, Gold (premium currency) and other perks can be purchased with real money.
