The 10 Biggest Reveals From New York Comic Con

Along with July's San Diego Comic Con, October's New York Comic Con is usually one of the biggest pop culture events of the year. 2016's convention - the eleventh of the annual event - was no different and over the course of last weekend, we learned some fantastic things about our favorite films and TV shows. Massive figures in the industry like DC, Marvel, 20th Century Fox, BBC America and many more were in attendance. As such, we got some great new information on everything from War of the Planet of the Apes to the upcoming Power Rangers reboot, not to mention there was also a great deal of stuff on offer for comic book enthusiasts as well. Specifically focusing on the screen, though, there were some very juicy announcements that came our way this past weekend, and here are the 10 reveals that had us the most excited. 10) "Something With Blade" In The Works At Marvel To start off with, we have a fascinating off-hand comment rather than a full-on reveal, but it still ranks as one of the most interesting news pieces to come out of this year's NYCC. During the panel for the upcoming Underworld: Blood Wars, star Kate Beckinsale was asked if there had ever been any plans for a crossover with Marvel's Blade, the vampire hunter played by Wesley Snipes in a trio of movies from 1998 t0 2004. Her intriguing reply was that this was touted at one point but “they’re busy. They’re doing something with Blade.” The "they" in question is obviously Marvel Studios, which gives credence to the rumours that the Daywalker will soon be joining the MCU in some form. In fact, last year, Snipes himself said that he'd been talking to Marvel about returning to the role for a Blade 4. Despite that, we'd think the more likely course of action would be for the character to be recast. Perhaps for his own Netflix series? Time will tell, but rest assured that you haven't seen the last of the vampire hunter. 9) War Of The Planet Of The Apes Teaser Trailer 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes was a surprisingly intelligent and engrossing reboot/prequel of the classic franchise, held together by a fantastic motion capture performance from Andy Serkis as Caesar. Even more impressive was that 2014's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was just as good. Now, the pressure is on for the upcoming War of the Planet of the Apes to continue to hit the high bar set by the previous two instalments. While it doesn't give us a look at the film itself, this first trailer that landed at NYCC offers a visually stunning tease for the movie. In it, a blizzard drifts into a black void and gradually settles to outline Caesar's face. Serkis' voiceover then begins, saying to someone unknown (his wife and child from the previous film?) that they need to get away before the fighting starts. "I am sorry," he breathes. "War has begun." 8) William Shatner Is Two-Face In Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders Sequel In a year where the live-action Batman (as played by Ben Affleck) is darker than ever, animated comedy movie Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders - an affectionate return to the world of the 60s Batman TV show - is a sorely needed reminder that Gotham's hero can crack a smile now and then. It's only just arrived in theatres this week, but a sequel has already been announced. What's more, it will have a very special guest star. Following on from the first movie's casting of original stars Adam West, Burt Ward and Julie Newmar, the as-yet untitled follow-up will unite the Caped Crusaders with another icon of that decade - Star Trek's William Shatner. The erstwhile Captain Kirk will voice none other than Two-Face in the movie. Fans might know that Two-Face never appeared in the show, but now, fifty years later, this wrong will at long last be righted. 7) Doctor Who Christmas Special Teaser This year's been hard on Doctor Who fans, as there's been no full season of the show. As such, the yearly Christmas special has more riding on it than usual; it has to be particularly good to make up for the drought of the rest of 2016. At NYCC, we got a suitably festive look at the episode - which is titled "The Return of Doctor Mysterio" - in the form of a short video that combined behind-the-scenes footage with some clips from the special itself. We also learned that the main premise is 'Doctor Who does superheroes.' Justin Chatwin (War of the Worlds, Orphan Black) is guesting as a Superman-like hero, and Matt Lucas will be reprising his role as the bumbling Nardole from the previous year's Christmas edition - a part he will also play in 2017's season. Seeing as superheroes are more prominent than ever now, it's a canny idea to have Doctor Who try its hand at the genre. If nothing else, it should be fun to see Peter Capaldi's sarcastic Time Lord come up against another sort of hero who wears an even more outlandish costume than he does. 6) First Trailer For Doctor Who Spinoff Class In lieu of new Doctor Who this year, we're instead getting a brand new spinoff. Aimed at the young adult audience in particular, Class will see the kids of Coal Hill High School in London (a major setting in recent Peter Capaldi seasons) fighting aliens and monsters in the Doctor's absence. Fans had little idea what to expect from the show before last weekend, but we finally got our first look at Class at NYCC. The first trailer introduced us to four teens (one of them's an alien) played by newcomers Greg Austin, Sophie Hopkins, Fady Elsayed and Vivian Oparah, as well as a welcome appearance by the Doctor himself. By the looks of it, the series has a similar pace, humour and tone to its parent show, but with a definite stronger teen flavour. The trailer also makes clear a big influence on the show, as the characters reference Buffy the Vampire Slayer at one point. 5) Ninjak vs. The Valiant Universe Look out Marvel and DC, there's a new player in town. Presumably looking to replicate the success of Marvel's Netflix shows, Valiant Comics are moving into the digital arena with this newly-announced web series starring multiple characters from their shared universe. Ninjak vs. The Valiant Universe is a six-part series that looks set to be an all-action introduction to a new superhero world. As shown in the trailer, it revolves around the titular Ninjak, an MI-6 assassin, as he goes rogue and has to fight for his life against reams of Valiant heroes. The cast has a few names that will excite superhero TV fans. The title character is played by Michael Rowe, most known for appearing in Arrow as Deadshot. Starring as fan favourite anti-hero Bloodspot, meanwhile, is Jason David Frank AKA Tommy the Green Ranger from multiple incarnations of Power Rangers. Valiant hopes that this will be the first many more digital series, both of the live-action and animated variety. There's no word yet on how this will affect Sony's plans for a series of Valiant movies, but as of now, you can color us intrigued. 4) The Walking Dead Season 7 Premiere Clip All summer long fans have been busy theorizing just who Negan could have killed in the final moments of The Walking Dead's sixth season finale. Now, the wait is almost over and we'll find out the answer when the show returns on October 23rd. Ahead of that, however, The Walking Dead panel at NYCC revealed an exclusive clip from the seventh season premiere that helps us narrow down who Negan's unfortunate victim could be. In the clip, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) taunts a freshly grieving Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) about his loss, asking him if he's just killed his "right-hand man." The clip ends with Negan dragging Rick into his trailer, presumably for some gruesome punishment. Firstly, we now know for certain that Rick is not the victim, and Negan's taunts suggests the victim's a male. There are several characters who could be described as Rick's right-hand man, but the pervading theory is that it's Glenn. Meanwhile, the ending suggests that another big moment from the comic series will be adapted; in the source material, The Governor chops off Rick's hand, but many are thinking that Negan will do the honours in the TV show. 3) Power Rangers Teaser Trailer The Power Rangers movie reboot is the most hotly contested remake since, well, the last one. Attempting to darken the notoriously kitschy classics kids show from the 90s is either a bastardization of the source material or an interesting experiment, depending on who you ask. What fans really needed was a trailer to make up their minds. Thankfully, we got just that at NYCC, but fans seem to be just a split as they were before. The first trailer really tones down the connections to the original series, with only a hint at the costumes and a short riff on the classic theme. Instead, it focuses on setting up the more fleshed out heroes as they come across a strange alien power that transforms their lives. As has many have said, the trailer much more resembles 2012's Chronicle than Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. 2) Iron Fist After Luke Cage delivered another very strong series from Marvel and Netflix, fans are more excited than ever for next year's Defenders miniseries, which will unite the aforementioned Power Man with Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist in a small screen, street-wise version of The Avengers. Before that can happen, however, we have to meet the last name on that list first. As played by Finn Jones, Iron Fist will dabble in the kung-fu/mystical side of the MCU and looks to be a departure from the other Netflix shows. Thankfully, the first trailer demonstrates that it will retain the serious tone of its fellow Defenders-related series. There's even a fight in a corridor, which has become a staple for Daredevil. In fact, the trailer only hints at the more other-wordly aspects of Iron Fist e.g. Danny Rand's strangely glowing hand. We still don't know how far it will go down this avenue, but for now, it's probably a good idea for it to focus on the more familiar aspects of the show - New York, a troubled, grounded hero etc. 1) Sigourney Weaver Joins The Defenders In addition to the Iron Fist trailer, we also got another massive reveal about Marvel's Netflixverse this weekend. In what should have been the Iron Fist panel, the three other Defenders - Charlie Cox, Krysten Ritter and Mike Colter - crashed the party, which led to a very exciting announcement. Joining the four heroes in The Defenders is none other than Sigourney Weaver as the main villain. Marvel's TV shows have attracted some top tier talent over the years, from Daredevil's Vincent D'Onofrio to Jessica Jones's Carrie Ann-Moss, but the Alien actress is undoubtedly the biggest name yet. The main question now is: just what role is she playing? Evil ninja clan The Hand from Daredevil will surely have a major presence in the show, so will Weaver be an ally of theirs? Or maybe she'll be the head of mysterious organization IGH from Jessica Jones? Whatever the role is, a Hollywood legend like Weaver is a welcome addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And, judging by previous villains in the Netflix shows, the actress has a good chance of becoming one of the best bad guys in the MCU.
