10 Witty Halloween Costumes Based On 2013 Movies

Even more than ghosts and provocative costumes, Halloween has become marked by its unoriginality. Year after year, people dress up as the same generic things. I'm no exception to this. As a child I was Zorro 7 times. While Zorro is totally awesome, and I loved wearing a mask and a cape, a little variety would have been nice. You'd think with only one legitimate excuse a year to dress up as something, people would want to take full advantage of it. Unfortunately, year after year, we see the exact same nurses, vampires, and cats populating our Halloween parties. Well, I say this year it's time to get original, it's time to get witty, and of course, it's time to reference some movies. In order to help everyone's Halloween be a bit better, I've come up with this list of 10 witty costumes that you can pick from 2013 movies. There won't be anything on here you can buy at a costume store, but hopefully there will be something that you find worth the effort. I've tried my best to come up with some creative picks, so hopefully any of these will keep you from the horrible fate of matching costumes with someone else you see. Disclaimer: If you do opt for any of these costumes, you'll likely be asked to explain what you are over and over again. So without further ado, read on for my list of 10 Witty Halloween Costumes From 2013 Movies. Cast Member Of This Is The End What You'll Need Anything you can find in your closet. What You'll Do One of the year's best comedies was definitely This Is The End, and part of what made it so enjoyable is that it featured many actors we know and love playing themselves. Why bother creating a character when your own personality (albeit sometimes with a few slight tweaks) is even more interesting? So, what do you do this Halloween? You dress up as yourself and say you're a cast member of This Is The End. It's the perfect costume for those of you who are too lazy (or too broke) to go out and get a costume. It'll take no effort, no money, and should get some laughs as well. Lee Daniels' The Butler What You'll Need A tuxedo, white gloves, a sharpie. What You'll Do One of the more ridiculous controversies this year was the name controversy over The Butler. Because that name was used by a silent 1916 movie, the modern film had to find a new title. Instead of coming up with something original, they just slapped the director's name and an apostrophe S at the start, making for one of the most ridiculous names for a movie this year. The best way to make fun of that whole ordeal? Dress as a butler, and then make sure everyone knows you belong to Lee Daniels. After all, the only way to truly show something is yours is to be sure to put your name on it. Sharpie "Lee Daniels" on every inch of your skin, then proceed to act like you're a butler for the entire night. Take A Knee What You'll Need Some form of spandex shirt and tights. What You'll Do One of the worst movies of the year, and thus one of the best to make fun of, was without a doubt the Smith-tastropy of After Earth (copyright pending on that phrase. It'll be in higher demand with every film the father/son duo does together.) Perhaps the lamest concept in the entire movie was Jaden Smith constantly being instructed to take a knee in order to control his fear. Take a knee? What is this, 10-year-old little league? Should he play in the dirt in right field as well? So for this costume, all you have to do is wear some sort of tight spandex suit, and then drop to a knee and steady yourself every time you feel the inkling, which if you're doing it properly by the movie, is every five freaking seconds. Be careful though, you don't want anyone to mistake you taking a Jaden Knee as Tebowing. Bloody Superman What You'll Need A Superman suit. Fake blood. What You'll Do The most controversial part of Man Of Steel is without a doubt when Supes kills Zod. (Oh. Sorry. Spoiler alert.) So what better way to shake up the traditional Superman costume than to throw a little blood into the picture? All you do is wear your traditional Superman costume and dip your heads in some red food coloring and corn starch. Then you can properly display the blood Superman had on his hands after that brutal murder of his last enduring planetman. Bonus points if you spend the night tearfully yelling as you stare in disbelief at the dried blood on your hands. Bizarro Warm Bodies What You'll Need Traditional zombie makeup. Blonde hair. Two X chromosomes. What You'll Do I'm sorry if this list has been slightly focused on costumes for males so far. I've spent about 98% of my life exclusively thinking about costume ideas for males. But don't worry blonde-haired girls, I've got an awesome costume idea for you as well. You get to dress up like a zombie. And you aren't dressing up like just any zombie, you get to be Teresa Palmer as a zombie. The entire time I was watching Warm Bodies, I couldn't shake the thought that the movie was going to take a dark, dark twist, R was going to attack the girl he loves, and they would live happily ever after as zombies. It would've been a much different movie, and I actually think it could've been quite an entertaining one. So my idea for this one is you enact that bizarro version of the film. Dress up as a zombie, but make it a Teresa Palmer zombie. You can even speak in an Australian accent. Nothing is more awesome than a blonde zombie with an Australian accent. The Place Beyond The Pines What You'll Need 3 other people. Green clothing. Pine-scented air freshener. What You'll Do Sometimes Halloween costumes aren't as much fun unless you do them with a group. There are a lot of great group costumes. The Three Musketeers, The Three Blind Mice, The Three Stooges, Three's Company, Lewis, Clark, and their canoe... the list goes on and on, but what if you're much cooler than I am and you have more than two friends? Well, then you need a costume for four people, and boy have I got a great one from one of the best movies of the year. Many foursomes doing The Place Beyond the Pines will want to be Dane DeHaan, Bradley Cooper, Ryan Gosling, and Eva Mendes. While that would be cool, my idea is much simpler. Three of you dress up like tress, and then the lucky chosen one doesn't even have to do anything else. He just simply stands beyond those evergreens, or in the place beyond the pines. This one will likely elicit a lot of groans (as I'm sure just reading my description does), but I guarantee the chuckles that happen the next day when people reflect on your costume will definitely make this one worth it. No One Can Hear You Scream What You'll Need A space helmet/fishbowl. The willingness to go an entire night without talking to anyone. What You'll Do Gravity is probably the hottest movie in the world right now, and while it may have slowed slightly by the time Halloween hits, there will still likely be plenty of astronaut costumes which are now being used as Gravity costumes. We all know that in space, no one can hear you scream. So for this costume, all you have to do is act like you're screaming all night, but never make any noise. With a fishbowl over your head of course. This is also great for those of you who don't really like small talk at parties. In space, you can talk as much as you want, and no one is going hear a word. You instantly have an excuse to not speak to anyone at all. Bonus points if you float around the room and bump into people, and extra bonus points if you look like George Clooney. Overly-Infatuated Nick Carraway What You'll Need An old-fashioned suit. Some hair wax. What You'll Do In every iteration of The Great Gatsby Nick has seemed a bit uh... into his friend Jay. Baz Luhrmann's version of the story was no different. In every scene Nick gazed longingly at Gatsby and tried to imitate his every move. So how do you capture this in a costume? It's simple really, you dress like Nick would, which could easily be mistaken for Gatsby, especially when you speak in a F. Scott Fitzgerald tone all night. People will likely ask if you're dressed up as Gatsby. When they do, your reply should be something like this: "Me? Gatsby? Oh no. I'm sorry, but you're quite mistaken. I am flattered though. I'll have you know I actually know Mr. Gatsby, and he's quite the impressive man. I'm positively thrilled you could confuse me with him." Bonus points if you glare at someone dressed as Daisy all night. A Paramount Adaptation What You'll Need Really just about anything you can think of that's somewhat related to a book. What You'll Do While World War Z is a pretty cool zombie movie, fans of the book it's based on may have noticed that it isn't really anything like the book at all. Sure, they share a title, and zombies are involved, but that's about the extent of the similarities. So for this costume, you get to dress like anything you want that is somewhat related to a literary work, and then call yourself a Paramount adaptation. It's a great way to reuse a costume without really reusing a costume, or just another idea for those of you who are a bit too lazy. Grab a sailor's hat and act like you're supposed to be The Count Of Monte Cristo, or throw on a ring and claim that it's your adaptation of The Hobbit. The possibilities are endless for this costume. A Modern-Day Shakespeare What You'll Need A knack for speaking in olde English. What You'll Do Joss Whedon's Much Ado About Nothing got its theatrical release in 2013, and for the most part has been extremely well-received by critics and fans alike. Part of the film's charm is the fact it used the original Shakespearean dialogue. Happem to be a fan of classic plays? Well then for Halloween this year you can be a modern adaptation of Shakespeare. It's a perfect excuse to be as pretentious as you want in your conversation for an evening, and the costume won't be that hard. You can throw on a suit, but it really isn't necessary.
