5 More Star Wars Characters That Deserve Spin-Off Films

Rumours are swirling about Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg writing stand-alone films for the Star Wars universe, prompting some to believe the ultimate goal of Disney is to follow the Marvel formula and eventually release 2-3 films a year set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

It’s been reported that Han Solo, Boba Fett, and Yoda are all in line for their own spin-off films, and the potential of those flicks have many fans giddy with excitement. While Disney has yet to confirm these films, if nothing else, the fan response to the rumours should prompt them to proceed with those plans and make movies for those three characters (or at least Bobba Fett).

If Disney does indeed plan a whole universe worth of films, it’s likely that a lot of the stand-alone movies will be based on characters from the expanded universe or even characters created by Disney. I’d hope the people at Disney don’t feel the need to create characters since there are thousands of already existing characters out there, but I could see them looking to build their own universe instead of pulling from what has been established. Regardless of what they do in terms of bringing in new characters, there are still some awesome ones from the past six films that deserve two hours to themselves.

I’ve compiled a list of 5 more Star Wars characters that I think would make for awesome films. I’ve pulled these characters from the previous films, but I’ve also taken into account their expanded universe appearances. On the assumption that the spin-off rumours are indeed true, the three characters mentioned above aren’t included as Disney already has plans for them.

So head to the next page to read my first choice for another awesome stand-alone Star Wars film!

Lando Calrissian

lando 5 More Star Wars Characters That Deserve Spin Off Films

I’ve always thought that Lando is one of the most interesting and complex characters in the Star Wars universe, and that he wasn’t used nearly enough in the films. Well now is the chance to give him his moment and completely flesh out the character. He isn’t necessarily one of the good guys, heck he was a pretty big scum bag at times, but the guy had morals and a code of ethics. He was extremely loyal to his friends, so that makes him okay in my book. Plus the duality to his character is part of what makes him so interesting.

What I really want to see is Lando back when he owned the Millennium Falcon. The story of Han winning the Falcon from Lando would be great, and a perfect way for the films of the universe to cross-over, especially if Disney does proceed with their plans for a stand-alone Han Solo film.

Another option would be drawing the story from Lando Calrissian and the Flamewind of Oseon, where Lando ticks off the wrong cop and things go sour. It could be adapted into some crazy story of Lando on the run across the galaxy, showing all the various places he hides out from a cop who’s out for blood. It’d be a nice way to show some of the sketchier planets in the Galaxy and a lot more of the Star Wars underworld.

Darth Maul

darth maul sith lords 1 5 More Star Wars Characters That Deserve Spin Off Films

Darth Maul was undoubtedly the highlight of the prequel trilogies. At least in terms of badass characters, there is no one that compares to the red-faced, double-edged lightsaber wielding Sith apprentice. Yet we know almost nothing about him! There was an expanded universe novel dedicated almost entirely to him, but it still gave hardly any background.

What’s with those horns? What’s with the funky red and black face (it’s actually a Sith tattoo, not his skin) and why was he so submissive despite being the most impressive martial artist with a lightsaber in all the galaxy? In addition to answering all the questions above, we’d get to see Maul for more than the minuscule amount of screen time he received. Talk about a character that was robbed from us far before his time.

Another solid option would be a story about him surviving his assumed death in Menance. According to the expanded universe he actually survived the fall down the reactor chasm, but there’s never any real explanation of how he does that. The power is totally in your hands Disney. They say only Siths deal in absolutes, well I absolutely want to see a Darth Maul film.

Ewoks

star wars ewoks 5 More Star Wars Characters That Deserve Spin Off Films

I get it. If you’re over 35 you’re supposed to hate Ewoks. After all, how could a bunch of teddy bears overthrow the empire? Well guess what, I’m not over 35, and I love the Ewoks.

I’m also aware that the Ewoks already got spin-off films. The Ewok Adventure and Ewoks: The Battle for Endor were made for TV movies that focused on some kids stuck on Endor. While those films are cute and enjoyable for fans of Star Wars, what I want to see is a full-fledged, made for theaters Ewok adventure.

What better way to expose Star Wars to a new generation of children then to let them grow up on a few Ewok films and then graduate to the other Star Wars films. It’s only a matter of years before kids who grow up on flawless special effects won’t be interested in the original trilogy (sad I know, and I’m dreading the day, but it will happen). Give them these Ewok films and they’ll fall in love with the Star Wars Universe.

That doesn’t mean that the films have to be just for little kids. A whole species of little ferocious beasts living on the moon of a planet can be dark as well, I’m just saying keep this one with a PG rating.

I’m very interested to see the origin of Ewoks though. How did these little creatures come to live on a moon, and how are they so well equipped for battle when the time comes? That’s the story I want to see. Help me out Disney.

Obi-Wan Kenobi

ewan 5 More Star Wars Characters That Deserve Spin Off Films

The story of Obi-Wan Kenobi is as depressing as they come in the Star Wars world. Sure, when Anakin went bad it destroyed Padme, but she died right after, so it’s not like she had to suffer with what her husband had done for long. On the other hand, Obi-Wan not only had to see his best friend and Padawan turn to the dark side, but he had to chop off his legs in the process. Say what you want about the prequel films, but the pain in Obi’s voice and eyes as he has to cut Anakin down gets me every time.

But after Anakin has been destroyed, or so we briefly think, Obi has to move to Tatooine, change his name (kind of), and watch over a young Luke Skywalker from a distance. But what did he do for all those years in the desolation of that desert planet? We need a movie to step in and fill the gaps between Episode III and Episode IV.

I want to see a movie chronicling everything he did in waiting. He was a Jedi master, and one of the last ones left, so it’s safe to assume that he made some pretty awesome discoveries in that time. Somehow he learned the ways of living after death, at least enough to speak to Luke later on. He became very strong with the force, and it’d be amazing to see his development when he was in hiding keeping Luke safe.

The biggest plus side to this movie is there’d be no need to recast. Ewan McGregor is still alive and still looks relatively the same. This film would be the perfect way to connect the Disney movies to the previous trilogies.

Wedge Antilles

%name 5 More Star Wars Characters That Deserve Spin Off Films

I know this pick may not be as common as the rest I have on this list, but hear me out…

Wedge Antilles is regarded as possibly the greatest fighter pilot in all the Rebellion. That’s a pretty impressive honor to hold. He’s also the only pilot to have survived both attacks on the Death Star. Talk about having some survivor’s guilt there. This film could obviously be a lot more than Top Gun in space, but then again, do we really need it to be anything more than that?

Show Antilles training to be a fighter and then have some awesome dogfights in space. He was the one who saved Luke from the TIE fighter that Luke couldn’t shake. Let me repeat that: Luke Skywalker, a Jedi in training, couldn’t shake the fighter, but Antilles gunned it down no problem. Very impressive if you ask me.

He’s the lead character in many of the X-Wing novels, so it isn’t as if there’s a lack of information to pull from. Bring in the whole Rogue Squadron that Antilles creates and show the adventures and missions that they go on across the Galaxy. An Antilles film would be another great way to reveal some of the lesser known parts of the Star Wars universe.

Those are my picks for 5 other Star Wars films? What do you think of the choices? Which characters would you rather see in a stand-alone film? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Read some of this, it should answer some of your questions. http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Darth_Maul

    Ewoks, Ewoks!?!?! No….Just …No. :)

  • Barry the Fable Guy

you were doing good until the word Ewoks appeared on my screen.

  • ModernMacgyver

    I want to see a Porkins spin-off

    • dsfsa

ahhahahahahahahaha u my friend are a legend

  • dangeer

The story of Darth Maul surviving has already been done in The Clone Wars TV series, and done very well at that. But a Maul origin story might be good.

  • JC

Leave an Ewoks spinoff for Disney Channel or a direct to dvd film, not for a theatrical release.

  • Ryan

Yes yes! You so got this right. With the exception of the Ewoks. And Obi-wan or Darth Maul should be the #1 choice for any Star Wars fan. Great article, thnx! (:

  • Ryan

Nope on Ewoks or Wedge. How about Mace Windu

  • Mr Sinister

Wedge all the way the unsung hero of star wars I would also love a Grand Moff Tarkin flick but without the amazing late Peter Cushing I doubt it would deliver.

  • Eric Shelton

Darth Maul? You mean the over-the-top spinning ballerina? The opposite of Jar Jar that still equally showed Lucas has no concept of character or subtlety? That guy? Groan…. The ONLY good thing about the prequels was Ewan MacGregor as Obi-Wan. An Obi-Wan or a Wedge movie would be great.

  • Anubis2705

Darth Maul? seriously? The guy who can only stand around, look dagerous and wave around with his lightsaber? Darth Plagueis, Palpatine or Grievous would be far more interesting material for an own movie. And if someone would make an adaptation of “Darth Plagueis” by James Luceno, there would be still enough Maul.

The Ewoks had two spin-off-movies and… yeah, just forget them. I like the battle-teddies as long as they destroy AT-STs and drive speederbikes, but no own movies – it just dosn’t work.
    But i absolutly agree about Obi-Wan ;-)

  • Azazil

What no love for Dash Rendar from “Shadows of the Empire”?

  • Nick Fantastic

There’s also a story that mixes ,ail and obi wan again on tattooine in between episode III & IV they could do something off that

  • Colonel Solo

Ewoks are a terrible Idea for a film. I am also under 35 and while Ewoks were a pivotal people for the rebellion, by themselves they are no more interesting then the Gungans (fuck you JarJar). Anyways, I’d like to see Greivous as the warrior he once was.

  • http://www.facebook.com/stephy.sipes Stephy Sipes

I am 100% in agreement, especially on the Lando & Obi-wan ones.

  • http://www.facebook.com/mark.ellzey.5 Mark Ellzey

    It’s not a tattoo. He’s a zabrak.

  • Jonathon Bonesaw Reid

    Force Unleashed with Starkiller movie

  • 7992

wedge cant bullseye a wamprat in a t-16 though

  • SubSumeYou

I won’t see them. George Lucas created this, not Disney Studios, not J.J. Abrams, not Timothy Zahn, not Lawrence Kasdan, to hell with Whedon, not Alan Dean Foster (his take on them are awful, although, I do seem to like his ghost writing of the Star Wars novelization) not Drew Karpashyn and so on and so on.

  • D

Fuck lando….I say mace windu…recasting Samuel of course
