5 Reasons Why We’re Skeptical Of Deadpool

In only a matter of months we will have a Deadpool movie playing in theaters. That’s right, a Deadpool movie. If someone were to tell me that 5 years ago, I probably would’ve thought they had several drugs in their system. But no, this right here is the real deal. BUT, could the Deadpool movie we are getting not exactly be the ideal Deadpool movie that we’ve been waiting all this time to watch? Are we actually getting stiffed for a pleasurable comic adaption, and instead just going to get a run-of-the-mill action flick? The first trailer for the film, which can be seen above, might have been impressive, but let's play devil's advocate for a moment and look at what could possibly go wrong here. On that note, read on for 5 reasons why we're still a bit skeptical of Deadpool. 5) If It’s Anything Like The Leaked Script, Then We Have A Big Problem Listen, I didn’t have a single problem with the original Deadpool script that popped up on the internet way back when. It was a very good and well paced plot that seemed to stay true to the character, which is something I loved and absolutely couldn’t wait to see on screen. Flash-forward about 3 years into the future though and I’m no longer interested in seeing THAT script brought to life on screen. It’s not that I didn’t like or I didn’t enjoy it, it’s just that I really think FOX has an opportunity here to make something original and different compared to the old script, and my hope is that they take this “opportunity ball” and run with it, otherwise it will just be another missed opportunity for them. At this point, plot details are still being kept tightly under wraps, so we're not sure how much of the original script made it into the final cut. We can only hope that the studio has their head on straight and gives fans the Deadpool story they deserve. 4) It’s Made By Fox Another problem I fear for the film is that it will be covered in Fox's stench. Fantastic Four is an example of what I’m talking about. The director and studio both had different ideas for that film, which ended up with the movie feeling like an unfinished pet project, even with chunks of it seeming to be missing. I’d absolutely hate for the ideas presented by Tim Miller to not exactly jive with Fox’s overall picture, only for them to remove several things from the film post-production. I say this because looking at how Fantastic Four turned out, Deadpool could absolutely be dragged through the mud by film critics everywhere, and that wouldn’t help the character at all. It’d actually set him back quite a few years back, with any studio being tense or even afraid of even considering making another film revolving around him. That being said, Deadpool does have a glimmer of hope in it in the fact that it seems to be going against Fox’s policy of not allowing the characters to appear in their comic book costumes on film. Not to mention Colossus finally looks like the Colossus from the comics, which is an automatic plus. 3) The Film’s Rating Raises Some Red Flags Honestly, I'm a bit concerned with Deadpool's rating. I'm worried it may be there just so that Fox and the director can put as many curse-words and gory money shots in the film as possible. Sadly, we live in an age of cinema where some people honestly think that more blood, violence and cursing equates to a good movie, when that isn’t the case at all. Deadpool is a character who can honestly make it as an interesting subject to watch without have gratuitous amounts of blood spun everywhere as he goes on a rampage. Honestly, it wasn’t until Marvel NOW that I as a comic book reader noticed how graphic Deadpool’s solo series was. Until then, the Deadpool comics I read weren’t gore-fests. But from the looks of the trailer, a gore-fest may be the exact route Fox is taking with this movie. And honestly, when you think about it, there are actually some directors who believe chalking a movie full of blood and foul-language automatically makes it a good movie because of how “edgy” it is, and that is far from the truth. Look at the Saw movies as a prime example. They are nothing but films about dismembered body-parts, and they aren’t exactly great. But then you look at a movie like Jack Reacher, which was an exuberant action thriller and honestly had no blood in it from what I recall. I'm all for an R rating here, I just hope that Deadpool doesn’t try to out-do Saw. 2) The Film Better Not Take Place On That Dang Freeway If you’ve seen the trailer for Deadpool, you’ll see that all of the action sequences seem to take place on a busy freeway. Hopefully Fox and Tim Miller are smart enough not to place a superhero movie on a freeway for a long period of time. I say this because one can only imagine the chaos if 75% of the film took place on a freeway as cars are zooming by and people are frantically screaming as a man in a red and black costume slice and dices a bunch of armed goons. And it isn’t only the trailer that makes me have this fear, it’s also the countless set photos we’ve received from this movie, as all of them took place on or around a freeway (even under it). I mean, I guess it would be kind of funny in a cynical way if they actually had this movie take place in mostly one location, but I don't think it'd be something that fans want to see. 1) It Looks More Like An Adam Sandler Film Than A Deadpool Film Deadpool is a very eccentric and entertaining character. He has such a rich and vibrant history that he has climbed the ranks, in my opinion at least, to becoming one of my favorite comic book anti-heroes. One of the qualities that I absolutely loved about him was his sense of humor, because it wasn’t heavy-handed, and it wasn’t shoved down my throat violently. From the recent trailer, it seems they are relying heavily on the humor, not using it as a character trait like it should be, but more as a crutch to help keep the character afloat the comic book movie tidal-wave that is on it’s way. Many fans have stated that ever since Deadpool became “mainstream” and was discovered by the internet, he became a joke machine rather than an actual character. My fear for the film is that we’re just going to get a walking, shooting, joking machine. In the comics, Deadpool has had some rather important and emotional moments happen to him to show that he’s more than just a comedian. Take for example the time he was actually sexually assaulted by Typhoid Mary. Let me give you the backstory.... Wade was looking for Siryn, a character who he had an odd romantic relationship with. Instead of finding her, he just found a bunch of bad guys and had his day ruined. After dealing with all of that, he finally found Siryn, and instead of her wanting to listen to his complaints, they had a fight that ended with Wade walking off and getting incredibly inebriated. With his senses now toast, “Siryn” found him, and both characters shared an intimate moment. But alas! Upon coming-to, he found out that the woman he shared a passionate moment with was not “Siryn," but Typhoid Mary ,who took on the appearance of Siryn to take advantage of Wade. This left Deadpool in quite a perpetual state of sadness, but it also showed that Wade wasn’t simply a dude who had a knack for cracking jokes, but actually someone who could experience pain and betrayal. My hope is that we’ll see these types of qualities balanced out in the film, instead of Wade just being a flat comedic surface. All this being said, I hope I'm wrong.
