With production on Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla remake heating up, the casting process has begun and while various names have been rumored for the lead role (Henry Cavill, Joseph Gordon-Levitt etc.), an offer has now been put out to Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The young actor, who is perhaps best known for Kick-Ass and can currently be seen in Anna Karenina, is quickly becoming one of Hollywood’s most promising young actors.
Apparently, Taylor-Johnson is considering the offer but won’t make a final decision until he sees Frank Darabont’s re-write of the script. That being said, he’s very interested in the film and the producers definitely want him, it all just depends on the script now. While we don’t have any official details on the character that Taylor-Johnson is wanted for, recent rumors point to him playing some type of soldier, which would make sense.
Personally, I’d love to see Aaron Taylor-Johnson take the part. I loved him in both Kick-Ass and Savages and though I haven’t seen Anna Karenina yet, I’ve heard great things about his performance. He’s a very talented young actor and will likely become one of Hollywood’s go-to leading men in the next few years.
Admittedly, Godzilla is a pretty big tentpole for the studio, so whoever does take on the lead role will need to have the chops to pull it off. Some may see Taylor-Johnson as too young still to lead a film like this but from what I’ve seen of him, I think that he’s more than capable.
So far, not a whole lot is known about the film. Apparently, it’s going for a more realistic tone and will have at least two other monsters aside from the titular icon. Other than that though, there isn’t much to go on. Still, with Edwards behind the camera and Johnson possibly in front, I’d say that things are shaping up pretty well.
Godzilla will be released in 3D on May 16, 2014.
