Halloween’s nearly upon us and the folks at Lionsgate are gearing up to scare us all silly. It’s been fifteen years since newbie filmmakers Eduardo Sanchez and Dan Myrick brought us The Blair Witch Project, and the found footage genre persists. There’s been the inevitable cash-ins on the pair’s scary witch fable, but nothing has bettered it in the shakycam department. Could Sanchez’s next feature, Exists, be the film to beat it?
If audience response is anything to go by, there’s a good chance that it will. Sanchez’s post-Blair career has been dotted with supernatural horrors and a jaunt into TV. Now he’s steering his work back to what made him a household name – people lost in the woods. Specifically, a bunch of friends who venture out into the Texan plains for a fun, carefree weekend. Their plan to kick back and relax is disturbed by the arrival of an urban legend.
It’s another take on sasquatch, that big mythical beastie whose existence is the stuff of legend. Already the focal point in last year’s Willow Creek, the resurgence of monster horror within found footage is a trend that this writer is incredibly excited about. We’ve had a glimpse at Sanchez’s style of Bigfoot in the first trailer (which you can see below), in a clip of a guy being pursued on his bike, and now we’ve got this latest clip (via Collider).
The new snippet dives right into an action sequence, where it appears our group of chums are under attack from the furry man-monster. I shall say no more – just check it out below.
Exists arrives in theatres and VOD on October 24th.
