Though he had a fairly large role in Phase One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it doesn’t look like Agent Coulson has much of a future with our beloved heroes. As far as we know, he won’t be appearing in any of the upcoming Phase Two films and now, director Joss Whedon is saying that he doesn’t see a place for Coulson in Avengers: Age of Ultron either.
Now, Coulson will appear in the upcoming TV show Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which takes place in the same universe as the films. So don’t worry about the character disappearing completely, he’ll still be around. He just won’t be showing up in anymore films, or at least it doesn’t seem that way.
Whedon spoke to the Associated Press (via Coming Soon) and said the following about whether or not Coulson will be in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
He could be, but right now it’s not something I’m pursuing because I have so much going on in ‘Avengers 2.’ Finding out that Coulson is alive would be an entire B story. And I already have too much movie. That’s better than the other thing.
As much as we all love Agent Coulson, I do agree with Whedon. Finding out that the character is still alive would have to be an entirely separate story and there’s obviously no room in the film for that. As it is the film is going to struggle to give all of its characters enough screen time. Perhaps Coulson will appear in some Phase Three films but for now, it looks like Phase Two will play out without everyone’s favorite S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.
Big things are in store for the Marvel Universe and from what we’ve been hearing, the company has some very exciting things in store for us. Be sure to stay tuned as we’ll be reporting on all the latest news but for now, tell us, what are your thoughts on Phase Two and more specifically, on the recently announced Avengers: Age of Ultron.
