Originally titled American Bullshit, David O. Russell’s newest film has now been re-named American Hustle, likely to avoid the marketing nightmare that the previous title would have caused.

If you’ve been keeping up with the film, you’ll know that it has the most impressive cast that we’ve seen in years, as it’s set to star the following talented individuals: Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner, Amy Adams, Louis C.K., Jennifer Lawrence, Alessandro Nivola, Elisabeth Rohm, Dawn Olivieri, Jack Huston, Michael Pena and Robert De Niro. Like we said, it’s impressive.

Based on a true story, the film follows “a financial con artist (Bale) and his mistress/partner in crime (Adams) who are forced to work with an out of control federal agent (Cooper) to turn the tables on other con artists, mobsters and politicians. At the epicenter of the entire tale is the passionate and volatile leader of the New Jersey state assembly (Renner), who is also the local hero and mayor of impoverished Camden.”

I don’t know about you, but to me, this film sounds like it could be on par with the director’s last effort, Silver Linings Playbook, which was probably the best film I saw in 2012. Russell’s last film before that, The Fighter, was also a tremendous movie that earned much acclaim and love from moviegoers and critics alike.

All things considered, I can’t see the director’s hot streak ending anytime soon and he will likely impress yet again with American Hustle. After all, how can you go wrong with that cast?

Set for a limited release on December 13th, and to go wide on Christmas Day, American Hustle is shaping up to be yet another awards contender for the always interesting director. We’ll continue to keep our eye on the project and report more news as it arises but in the meantime, tell us, what do you think of the new title? Let us know in the comments below.
