If Marvel Studios ever decides to push forward with Ant-Man 3, then the first story clues may lie with Ant-Man and the Wasp. Or so says MCU producer Stephen Broussard.
While appearing on the Empire Spoilercast (h/t ComicBook.com) for Peyton Reed’s teeny-tiny superhero sequel, Broussard waxed lyrical about Scott Lang’s second standalone adventure, before admitting that, at least for the time being, there are no concrete plans for a third movie.
That’s not to say Ant-Man 3 is off the table, necessarily, merely that Marvel Studios has so many other projects in active development that it may fall onto the back-burner. But even if that is the case, Broussard believes the general outline for Ant-Man lies in the Quantum Realm.
I think there’s more to do there. At this point of the process with the first Ant-Man, based on a glimmer of what you saw if you froze your DVD at the right place, we had the idea of ‘What if part two was about finding Janet?’ And it was an inkling of an idea. Nothing’s been announced, I’m not coyly sitting on any announcement. There really is no plans for the next one, but you can’t help but talk as filmmakers and creative people about where you would go next if you ever got the opportunity.
That’s not all; the Marvel über-producer went on to discuss Janet Van Dyne’s involvement in the franchise, and why she may prove to be a major figure for Ant-Man going forward. Besides, the fact that Ant-Man and the Wasp largely glossed over Janet’s time in the Quantum Realm opens up a pretty exciting opportunity for the inevitable (?) third film.
And we talk a lot about the Quantum Realm and there would be perhaps more opportunity to go down there. Maybe there’s more down there than we realized. Clearly, Janet’s been up to something and has different clothes on and some weapons. Where did those come from? And similarly, if you look at the right moment and freeze the DVD in a certain place, maybe you’ll see something else as well that could tip a hat to where the story could go.
At $448 million and counting, Ant-Man and the Wasp continues to perform overly well, and the delayed UK release has no doubt helped boost the sequel’s gross over the past few days. The next milestone for Marvel and Peyton Reed now is $500M worldwide…
