Aquaman is going to be a unique challenge for Warner Bros. While it definitely feels like the movie is in capable hands with James Wan (The Conjuring, Fast 7) at the helm, exploring the King of Atlantis’ mythology and underwater home could either be something truly special or a complete and utter mess.
One thing many fans would like to know is exactly how much of Aquaman is going to take place underwater. Filming in surroundings like that is notoriously expensive – even if special effects are primarily used – but comments from screenwriter Will Beall point to the movie finding a good balance between scenes set both in Atlantis and more familiar surroundings.
“I can tell you that not all of the action takes place underwater. Some of the most fun action in the movie actually takes place on dry land.”
That makes sense, but just how much of an impact will Justice League have on Aquaman? Beall – who wrote a version of that movie before Chris Terrio took over – seemingly pointed to it not really changing what he has planned for the character. He also confirmed that he’s working on the script alongside DC Entertainment CCO Geoff Johns.
“Nope, I am still working on [the script] with James [Wan] and Geoff [Johns]. No, no, they know what’s happening. Everybody knows what’s happening [in Justice League] so it’s not that. It’s working out what’s going to make the best [Aquaman] movie.”
It’s going to be very interesting seeing how this movie develops over the next couple of years, but we can look forward to getting our first glimpse of Atlantis in Justice League next November. The arrival of Aquaman, meanwhile, is something we’ll have to wait a little longer for, as it’s not set to be released until July 27th, 2018.
