With the weight of an entire video game franchise resting on its burly shoulders, Justin Kurzel’s live-action Assassin’s Creed movie is no stranger to heightened expectations.
Not only does the movie hold the chance to break the industry’s long-standing video game hoodoo, but long before Kurzel’s historical actioner began to coalesce, the director and his creatives were dreaming up ideas for sequels – sequels that could adopt Ubisoft’s approach to the core AC franchise and shift the action to new epochs in history. Such a flexible set-up can be traced back to the Animus, the flagship technology of Abstergo Industries that enables the host to tap into the genetic memories of their distant ancestors.
It’s a form of time travel, essentially, and though not everyone will be interested in the sci-fi sensibilities of Assassin’s Creed, according to the first wave of fan reactions, Justin Kurzel’s budding franchise-starter may just live up to those expectations after all.
In anticipation of next week’s release, Fox and New Regency hosted a special fan screening of Assassin’s Creed in New York City, and you’ll be able to get a small sample of the general consensus, below.
