Batman V Superman And Beyond: What To Expect From The DCEU

If there is a single, universal truth, it is surely that everything is connected. Nothing happens in a vacuum. Just as our own daily lives intersect and impact upon each other, so does artistic output – and when it comes to the fledgling DC Extended Universe, artistic output is key. Comic books have long been appreciated as the very specific art form that they are, but when the art of comic books is married with the art of filmmaking, something truly magical is born. While we have been enjoying that marriage between Marvel comic books and Marvel Studios for almost a decade now, it is the DC cinematic adaptations that are currently getting fans hot under the collar.

This is a movie that looks set to work on three levels. Firstly, in further developing the foundation of the DCEU, it will take thematic and narrative threads from Man Of Steel, and use them to tell an epic story about power, responsibility and consequence in a way that, not only develops the character of Superman, but also introduces ‘new’ characters. Secondly, it will feature a giant conflict between two of the most recognizable superheroes in the world – Batman and Superman – which is well-known in the DC comics, but has never been seen before in live-action cinema.

Thirdly, it promises to assemble the Justice League – again, never before seen in live-action film. This means that we will see the ‘DC Trinity’ of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, as well as confirmed appearances of The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg. In addition to the heroes, we will see a number of other DC icons, including Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, Alfred Pennyworth, Perry White and Doomsday.

While Man Of Steel – effectively the Superman origin story – kicked off the DCEU, Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice will prepare the ground for what promises to be a very different kind of cinematic universe. By introducing Wonder Woman, for example, it makes the statement that origin stories are not necessary, and that when you have characters as powerful as these, there are far more storytelling options open to filmmakers than those conventions we have seen many times over. We will be afforded the opportunity to discover these characters organically – as well as their burgeoning relationships with each other.
