Benedict Cumberbatch and director Scott Derrickson, the chief creative forces fuelling Doctor Strange, have long been championing the wonderful weirdness underpinning Marvel’s Phase Three feature.

Due to appear out of the ether and into theaters in November of this year, the film’s inaugural trailer offered but a glimpse of that mind-bending narrative, and while speaking to Empire, both Cumberbatch and Derrickson assured fans there’s plenty more to come.

First up, Cumberbatch zeroed in on Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme, including how his arc makes for a very different breed of superhero – one that we arguably haven’t seen before on the silver screen.

Said he:

“It’s a very different feel, different hero and different set of circumstances to what we’ve seen before. It’s another moment during Marvel’s evolution.”

Crafting that evolution from behind the lens is Scott Derrickson, who highlighted the creative agency that he’s been afforded in bringing Doctor Strange‘s origins tale to the moviegoing masses. When it comes to Cumberbatch’s debut as Marvel’s eccentric wizard, the director revealed that the team “felt free to go as far as we could imagine, so we’re doing a lot of things that I think have not been done before. Once we’d crossed a certain line we just kept going.”

Look for Benedict Cumberbatch to weave his magic as Doctor Strange on November 4. Also on board are Chiwetel Ejiofur, Rachel McAdams, Michael Stuhlbarg, Mads Mikkelsen and Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One.
