Or, maybe he is! The Sicario star doesn’t really seem to certain about it himself – but that might be because someone at Lucasfilm has a little word in his shell-like.

Earlier in in the month, Del Toro was quizzed about his Star Wars: Episode VIII role by a Spanish outlet, and he seemed to confirm that he would indeed be playing the bad guy in the movie, stating:

Ehhh…. the thing is…. They don’t let me talk too much about it, I’m like the villain.

Of course, like the villain was enough for most outlets, who ran it as confirmation that he was the villain… but that may have been premature, as Del Toro has now backtracked a little.

Here’s what he had to say about it to ET:

I don’t know if he’s a villain. People are saying that, but it’s like they read a different script than I read. It’s nice to keep people in the dark, a little bit of mystery is good. If they want to believe it’s the villain, then good.

Is that damage control after he was told he said a bit too much first time around? Or does his character ambiguously walk the line between good and bad?

Rian Johnson is currently shooting Star Wars: Episode VIII in Ireland, with Gina Rodriguez and Tatiana Maslany in the running for the female lead. We’ll keep you posted when we hear more on Del Toro’s role.
