Though Daniel Bruhl has briefly alluded to his involvement in next year’s Captain America: Civil War in the past, the Rush actor confirmed to The Independent that he will be playing one Baron Helmut Zemo in the Russo brothers’ hotly-anticipated sequel.

As the son of Heinrich Zemo, Bruhl’s character has a long history within the Marvel comics, first appearing all the way back in 1973. His origin story reveals that, after falling into a boiling hot broth of his father’s Adhesive X chemical compound, Helmut is mutated beyond recognition. If Marvel remains true to this interpretation, it’s likely that the actor will don extensive make-up in the final film, though any questions of cosmetics doesn’t dampen Bruhl’s excitement in the slightest.

Here he is talking to The Independent in relation to his part in Civil War.

“I think I can tell you that without being thrown into Marvel prison,” Brühl said. “For the first few days I’ll walk around like a little boy, just amazed by the megalomania of it. It’s such a huge project. We could do 20 films with the budget.”

Currently, all signs point to Bruhl’s part in the MCU encompassing an appearance in Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange, too. As for Captain America: Civil War, the actor will join a star-studded roster of villains that will put Cap to the test, with Frank Grillo joining the cast as the hard-boiled Crossbones.

Following their successful turn at the helm of last year’s rather excellent The Winter Soldier, the Russo brothers will return for Civil War, overseeing the likes of Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr. – who will no doubt act as the film’s headline event – Scarlet Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen as the mind-bending Scarlet Witch and a tantalizing appearance by Marvel’s new-fangled Spider-Man.

Joe and Anthony Russo will kick off Phase Three with a bang when Captain America: Civil War lands in theaters on May 6, 2016. For now, tell us, are you anticipating the sibling’s superhero ensemble piece?
