Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie Gets Heroic First Poster

It's surreal to know we're getting a Captain Underpants movie later this year. At least, it is for me. As a child who once obsessed over Dav Pilkey's gleefully juvenile book series, it swells my old(er) heart to know we're finally going to see these wacky, zany characters make their way onto the screen. While we're heard little about the project thus far, DreamWorks Animation will soon ring out their promotional bandwagon, starting with today's first poster, which might remind you of another superhero, one who'll also get his own animated movie later this month....

It’s surreal to know we’re getting a Captain Underpants movie later this year. At least, it is for me. As a child who once obsessed over Dav Pilkey’s gleefully juvenile book series, it swells my old(er) heart to know we’re finally going to see these wacky, zany characters make their way onto the screen. While we’re heard little about the project thus far, DreamWorks Animation will soon ring out their promotional bandwagon, starting with today’s first poster, which might remind you of another superhero, one who’ll also get his own animated movie later this month.

Captain Underpants will have Kevin Hart and Thomas Middleditch provide the voices of George Beard and Harold Hutchins, respectively, two fourth-graders whose notorious pranks and naughty self-made comic books often get them in trouble with their principal, Mr. Krupp (voiced by Ed Helms). But they pull off their biggest, baddest prank to date when they accidentally hypnotize their cunning principal into believing he’s Captain Underpants, their most popular comic book creation. Chaos ensues from that point on. Jordan Peele and Nick Kroll are also on board to voice the villainous Melvin and Professor Poopypants, respectively.

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, which is the film’s full official title (have we learned nothing from Doug’s 1st Movie?!), is directed by David Soren (Turbo) from a screenplay by Nicholas Stoller (Storks). Based on the title, it’s clear that DreamWorks Animation hopes this is one in an ongoing series, capitalizing on the 12 volumes that Pilkey produced over the past 20 years. Hopefully, the final product is more in line with Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events than Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie flies into theaters on June 2nd. Check out the first poster for the flick below and let us know if you’re looking forward to seeing it.
