Last Days On Mars is a film you wouldn’t expect to wow crowds at Cannes. It’s a sci-fi horror mash up set in space. Doesn’t sound like the sort of flick that’d win over critics at the year’s most influential event in cinema, right? Well, now you can get a glimpse of the film that’s causing such a stir, as the first clip is available online.
Taking elements of Prometheus, The Thing and Alien, Last Days On Mars (previously known as The Animators) comes from filmmaker Ruari Robinson. Robinson made a name for himself creating shorts. He received an Oscar nomination for 2002’s Fifty Percent Grey. Now he has a full length feature on his resume, with a pretty phenomenal cast list.
From the brevity of this preview the film shares a striking similarity to another upcoming sci-fi space flick, Europa Report. Both tell the tale of a bunch of astronauts whose mission goes awry. The cast really stand out for a small indie genre flick. Taking the lead is Liev Schreiber who is joined by Olivia Williams, Romola Garai, Elias Koteas, Johnny Harris, Tom Cullen and Goran Kostic. You can get a look at them in the snippet below.
LAST DAYS ON MARS follows the story of an astronaut crew on Mars on the verge of a major breakthrough, having collected rock specimens that reveal microscopic evidence of life. In their last hours on the planet, two astronauts go back to a cavernous valley on the surface of Mars to collect further evidence for their discovery, but a routine excavation turns deadly when one of them falls to his death and his body is taken as a host and re-animated by the very life form they sought to discover.
Last Days On Mars will be released in the UK and France on September 19th. No US release date has been announced.
