With the arrival of the first trailer for Avengers: Infinity War, fans have begun theorizing about which of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes aren’t going to make it out of their battle with Thanos alive. For a while, it’s been assumed that at least a few of the founding Avengers would be facing their end in either this movie or its sequel, but a new comment from one of the franchise’s stars suggests that we can safely assume one character will survive through Avengers 4.
While speaking with Vanity Fair, Chris Hemsworth – the God of Thunder himself – praised the professionalism and talent of his young co-star Tom Holland, who plays Spider-Man. In doing so, he made a reference to how he might “stick around” for future movies, saying the following:
“I’ve been hugely impressed by Tom Holland [Spider-Man] and the way he’s handled the transition. I didn’t look that comfortable on my first three films. Literally, this is my sixth film and I’m finally feeling like I may be allowed to stick around and stay here. But he just came in and had such an ease to his performance.”
Obviously, the Australian actor was careful to leave things vague, but his wording does suggest that he knows he’s going to be appearing in more films during the next phase of the MCU. This is obviously good news for Marvel fans, as Hemsworth arguably had his finest outing yet as the character in the recent Thor: Ragnarok. Taika Waititi has previously suggested that he would be interested in directing a fourth outing for the God of Thunder, too, which also supports the fact that Thor isn’t going anywhere in the next two Avengers movies.
Unfortunately for his co-stars, we can’t rule them out of the running just yet. Theories abound about Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, Hawkeye, Black Widow and even Thor’s brother, Loki, bowing out of the franchise in the next couple of years, and we’re all but certain that at least a few of them will meet their maker in the near future.
Avengers: Infinity War arrives in theaters on May 4th, while Avengers 4 then follows on May 3rd, 2019, by which point, the MCU will surely be a drastically different place.
