How I Met Your Mother stalwartĀ Cobie Smulders has enjoyed a string of exciting roles since CBS’ hit sitcom bowed off the airwaves three years ago – and that streak shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
Variety is reporting that Smulders, who impressed opposite Tom Cruise in the action sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, has signed on for Songbird, a new British comedy from writer-director Jamie Adams. Marking his fourth effort as director, we understand AdamsĀ has now welcomed Smudlers in the role ofĀ Joanne Sykes, the former frontwoman of a once-popular indie rock band called The Filthy Dukes.Ā Despite an exciting ’90s breakout, The Filthy DukesĀ areĀ in the midst of a dramatic comedown. Ditto for Joanne, whose life begins to unravel after she discovers that her long-time boyfriend has been cheating on her with, well, “just about everyone.”
The preliminary plot synopsis reads as so:
āJoanne finds out her boyfriend is cheating on her with just about everyone, and thereās little left for her once the group disbands. So, thinking about the next step, she drunkenly applies for university.Ā University isnāt quite what Joanne expected ā far less wild partying, and a lot more yoga and kale. While there, she falls in love with a librarian called Pete. Itās far from smooth sailing, but will going back to university be the new start she needs?ā
Also starring Jessica Hynes, Ian Smith, Laura Patch, Holli Dempsey (Dadās Army) and Emily Atack of The Inbetweeners fame, there’s currently no mention of when Songbird will be ushered in front of the cameras. Nevertheless, we’ll keep you posted as the Jamie Adams-directed picture begins to take shape.
