Conspiracies And Darkness Are Holding Up Bill & Ted 3

Bill & Ted 3 is one of those films that seems like a rumor. Could they really manage to bring back everyone's favorite slackers for another adventure, many years on? Isn't that just a pipe-dream? Not so, with a script done and a director in place. But something appears to be holding up the works, and according to Keanu Reeves it has to do with ... darkness.

Bill & Ted 3 is one of those films that seems like a rumor. Could they really manage to bring back everyone’s favorite slackers for another adventure, many years on? Isn’t that just a pipe-dream? Not so, with a script done and a director in place. But something appears to be holding up the works, and according to Keanu Reeves it has to do with … darkness.

Yep. Darkness. In a recent interview with MTV (via /Film), Reeves explained what was holding up the film. Here’s what he said:

It’s a long story. There’s lots of subterfuge and conspiracy theories. There’s a whole thing… I might have to do one of those independent press, conspiracy, other-name kind of [statements] explaining why it hasn’t happened yet, because it’s pretty dark out there … There’s all sorts of stuff and it just can’t — it’s just — there’s darkness out there that’s keeping it from happening … It’s not winning right now. It’s that part of the story where it’s looking grim. It’s the dark period of the idea!

Uh, OK. He also called it a ‘Quixote-esque thing’, which perhaps makes a bit more sense. If they’re having difficulty getting financing together, or things keep on going wrong (as they often do for film versions of Don Quixote), then Reeves’s comments make some sense. But the whole ‘conspiracy and darkness’ thing is both a bit mysterious and a bit … weird.

Maybe Reeves just cannot talk about the problems surrounding Bill & Ted 3 and is therefore using cryptic statements and subterfuge in order to avoid it. If it was just a script or a cast problem, one would think that he would come right out and say that. What I’m taking away from this is that Reeves is not confident in Bill & Ted 3 actually getting made right now. This is the polar opposite of Alex Winter, Reeves’s co-star, who has been pretty optimistic about the film so far.

What Reeves means by ‘darkness’ will be seen in the fullness of time…or not, as the case may be. Maybe he’s just screwing with us.

We can see Reeves in all sorts of projects in the meantime, with Man of Tai Chi coming out November 1st, and 47 Ronin hitting theatres on December 25th.
