For his feature film debut, Darius Marder is getting a band together for The Sound of Metal, an all-new musical drama that has eyed Matthias Schoenaerts and Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson for key roles.
Deadline has the scoop, revealing that it is Johnson who will take charge of Marder’s (metal?) band as its lead singer and The Danish Girl‘s Schoenaerts will play the part of the drummer – one who has to come to terms with his rapidly declining ability to hear. It’s unclear as of yet whether their budding music group begins and ends at two musicians, or if Marder is still casting the net in search of additional members, though we’ll keep you updated as this story develops.
Prior to taking the reins of The Sound of Metal, Darius Marder’s credits included a co-writer gig on the 2012 crime drama The Place Beyond The Pines. At the time of writing, it’s believed that Mader’s feature is still on the hunt for financial backing, but with Johnson and Matthias Schoenaerts on the verge of joining the drama, we don’t foresee his budding new project running into any problems anytime soon. Michael Costigan (Prometheus) and Ben LeClair of Nacho Libre are attached to produce with a summer shoot currently on the table.
Matthias Schoenaerts, Dakota Johnson and Darius Marder are just about the only notable stars anchoring The Sound of Metal for now, but Marder’s feature debut is one to key an eye on nonetheless. Johnson can next be seen opposite Leslie Mann, Rebel Wilson and Community star Alison Brie for next month’s rom-com How to Be Single.
