Will Dane DeHaan Be The Green Goblin In The Amazing Spider-Man 2?

A little while ago it was confirmed that Dane DeHaan would be joining The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as Harry Osborn, Peter Parker's friend and son of Norman Osborn. It was fairly safe to assume that considering the constant references to Oscorp in the first film that Norman would pop up as the Green Goblin in either this film or the final one of the trilogy, but now there is talk of Harry actually appearing as the villainous pumpkin-slinger.

A month ago it was confirmed that Dane DeHaan would be joining The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as Harry Osborn, Peter Parker’s friend and son of Norman Osborn. It was fairly safe to assume with the constant references to Oscorp in the first film that Norman would pop up as the Green Goblin in either this film or the final one of the trilogy, but now there is talk of Harry actually appearing as the villainous pumpkin-slinger.

At the premiere of John Krokidas’ Kill Your Darlings, which DeHaan stars in alongside Daniel Radcliffe, Krokidas was introducing the cast and when he got to DeHaan he said to the audience: “He’s the Green Goblin.”

So what does Krokidas comment mean? Is Marc Webb going to make Harry Osborn the first Goblin we see?

I’m going to say that Krokidas doesn’t actually know anything and was just referencing the fact that in Sam Raimi’s trilogy, Harry, at one point plays the New Goblin. Part of what made The Amazing Spider-Man so much better than the previous trilogy was how true it was to the comic stories. I find it hard to believe that Webb will deviate from that accuracy and have Harry don the Goblin suit before his father does.

Part of the complexity of Harry is the fact that he doesn’t know his father was the Green Goblin and the way he deals with the realization that indeed his father was Spider-man’s worst enemy. To have Harry become the Goblin first would not only take away that character detail, but it would also create the problem of just why some character that has yet to be referenced is flying around New York on a Goblin Glider.

It’d also be a peculiar choice to have anyone as the Green Goblin in this film considering Jamie Foxx is already confirmed to play Electro in the film. Is this going to be another overload of villains reminiscent of Spider-Man 3? I hope not.

I’m very interested to see how Webb introduces Harry considering that he’s really Peter’s first true friend. It’s likely that Harry will be the portal through which Norman is introduced, thus explaining some of the heavy Oscorp focus of the first film.
