HBO Films has published the first image from its upcoming movie Nightingale which stars David Oyelowo (Selma) as a troubled war veteran. This debut still accompanies a larger press release issued by HBO that further outlines details of the film’s release, which is now scheduled for May 29, 2015.

Directed by Elliott Lester from a screenplay by Frederick Mensch, Nightingale is described as “a provocative drama that probes the darkest corners of a disturbed mind, as a war veteran begins to unravel thread by thread. This searing story of solitude and isolation offers a poignant look at how life has failed one man.”

If there’s one thing that Oyelowo’s show-stopping turn in Ava DuVernay’s Selma proved, it’s that he can draw from an endless well of emotional resources. We look forward to seeing him commandeer another substantial character.

On the production side, HBO Films is working in tandem with Plan B Entertainment to produce, along with BN Films, which is also producing in association with Sea Smoke Entertainment and Yoruba Saxon Productions. From the HBO camp head of programming, Michael Lombardo offered his opinion on the forthcoming title:

“We are proud to be partnered with Plan B on this bold and powerful film. This extraordinary solo performance by the incomparably talented David Oyelowo clearly demonstrates why he is one of the most gifted actors today.”

Brad Pitt, executive producing on behalf of his Plan B production arm, also offered a similar comment:

“We are thrilled and honored to help bring ‘Nightingale’ to an audience. Sincere props to our friends at HBO for giving this extraordinary and courageous film its day.”

Nightingale will premiere on HBO Friday, May 29. You can get your first look at Oyelowo’s war veteran in the first image (via Rope Of Silicon) below.
