We already know that the Aquaman-centric DC animated feature film Justice League: Throne of Atlantis will kick things off in 2015, but it’s just been revealed that it won’t be alone. 2015 will consist of three DC animated films, as announced during the San Diego Comic-Con panel for the upcoming Batman: Assault on Arkham.Â
The two new features are Batman Versus Robin, a sequel to this year’s Son of Batman, and an original story from Batman: The Animated Series co-creator Bruce Timm called Justice League: Gods & Monsters.Â
[zerg]Batman Versus Robin will be based on the Scott Snyder/Greg Capullo New 52 comic story “The Court of Owls,” which is one of my personal favorite Batman stories. However, it never featured Batman facing off with his sidekick, so expect this to be a loose adaptation of the run, much like Son of Batman was only partly based on Grant Morrison and Andy Kubert’s Son of Batman tale.
There is a 2001 Justice League of America story titled “Gods & Monsters,” but as Timm’s film will be an original work, I suspect they only share a name.
Exact release dates and further plot details weren’t revealed, so we’ll just have to keep those projects on the backburner for now. I’ve liked most of the DC animated features they’ve put out over the years though and am definitely excited to see what they come up with next. They screened Batman: Assault on Arkham at SDCC, but if you weren’t there, DC has released the opening few minutes to hold you over until the film’s August 12th, 2014 home video and Digital Download release.
