It was announced last July that Eva Green had signed on to play opera singer Maria Callas, however, no other news had surfaced in regards to the project, until now.

THR is reporting that Niki Caro will now be directing the project based on the biography Too Proud, Too Fragile by Alfonso Signorini. The film, which will be titled Callas, will chronicle the great opera singer’s life through the ups and downs of her tumultuous life that included, health problems, parental problems, immense fame and wealth, and a career cut short.

There has been no reports about Green leaving the project, so we can only hope the French actress, who shares a reasonable resemblance to Callas, is still attached.

Personally, I love a good biopic and would kill to see Eva Green in this role. Callas’ story rings the same tone as Edith Piaf’s, whose story was depicted in La Vie en Rose, which won Marion Cotillard an Academy Award. Maybe Callas will do the same for Green.

The film is expected to shoot towards the end of the year, and into early 2012, for a late 2012 release.
