After a few snaps that had appeared here and there, Marvel finally released one of the first official images from Ant-Man and the Wasp the other day, giving us our best look yet at the suit worn by Evangeline Lilly. Unfortunately, however, fans quickly noticed something quite surprising about the outfit.
See if you can spot it for yourself in the photo below, before flipping through to the next one:
Yup, your eyes are not deceiving you. The design on the midriff of Wasp’s suit looks a lot like, let’s say, a phallic symbol. It’s fair to say that fans are pretty offended by this. Not especially by the image itself, but rather how everyone working on the movie never thought to point it out and correct it.
Apart from that little hiccup with the design, people are also complaining about the costume as some believe it’s a step down from the version seen at the end of 2015’s Ant-Man. In the film’s post-credits scene, Hope Van Dyne came across a Wasp suit made for her, commenting that “it’s about time” for her to get the chance to be a superhero.
That suit was largely similar to this updated version, but the colour scheme is much brighter, with the yellow, blue and red detailing on the outfit being much more pronounced. You can see the difference in the two photos below:
Despite this unfortunate and, rather hilarious, costume debacle, we’re still hugely anticipating Ant-Man and the Wasp. After all, Peyton Reed did a pretty good job with the original, delivering a fun, humorous and perfectly enjoyable MCU outing. So, we’re definitely eager to see where things go in the follow-up and where Scott Lang’s next big screen adventure will take him.
Said to retain the zany humor and spectacular (and miniature!) visuals that ensured the original became a breakout success, Ant-Man and the Wasp has been positioned as Marvel’s follow-up act to Avengers: Infinity War and opens on July 6th, 2018.
