Come 2017, Ewan McGregor will be reprising a character that first stormed onto screens almost two decades ago thanks to Danny Boyle’s long-rumored Trainspotting 2 (T2). Mark Renton isn’t the only persona from McGregor’s track record that has come up in conversation, however, given the Scot has once again entertained the notion of donning the iconic Jedi robes once more for a potential Star Wars spinoff centering on Obi-Wan.
Last we checked in on the matter, McGregor revealed that he would “very much like to do one,” but talk soon fizzled out shortly thereafter. Fast forward to now and, while promoting his directorial debut American Pastoral to French outlet Premiere (via Den of Geek), the actor expanded on his thought process.
Said he: “I’ve always thought there was a story to tell between my last one and Alec Guinness’ first one. It would be fun to film that story now I’m older. I’d be the right age. I’m 45, Alec Guinness was what, 60? I could do two of them (laughs).”
Whether an Obi-Wan spinoff gains any traction or not, McGregor evidently harbors a deep and abiding love for the franchise, and hopes that, moving forward, Disney’s juggernaut can “explore different genres under the Star Wars banner. And one of those could be an Obi-Wan Kenobi feature film. Or two! The Obi Wan Kenobi Story Part 1 and 2!” Hypothetically, with McGregor poised to cut his teeth on American Pastoral, could he also be in line to direct that potential offshoot?
Conjecture aside, next in line to light up theaters is Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. It’s been pegged for December 16 and released what is arguably its greatest trailer earlier this morning.
