With lantern in hand, Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) journeys back into The Further in our first look at 2017 horror sequel, Insidious: Chapter 4.

This time around, Shaye’s seasoned parapsychologist is flanked by Tessa Ferrer (Grey’s Anatomy), a newcomer to the franchise on board to play a character known as Aubrey. Indeed, if early installments in the series revolved around Patrick Wilson and Ty Simpkins’ father-son duo, Elise Rainier’s character has developed into the beating heart of the Insidious franchise, and we understand Chapter 4 is poised to take viewers back to Elise’s roots.

Beyond that, little is known about the story underpinning the Adam Robitel-directed sequel, but given Elise has now founded Spectral Sightings along with Specs and Tucker, we’d wager that Insidious: Chapter 4 will involve even more malevolent spirits attempting to claw their way out of the Netherworld known to you and I as The Further. Series co-creator Leigh Whannell penned the screenplay (Whannell also reprises the role of Specs) and here, Lin Shaye teases how their dealings with the paranormal will shape and define their professional relationship come 2017.

“It goes back to Elise’s beginnings. And you also meet Elise at a very different point in her life. It takes place right after the end of Chapter 3, when she walks off with Specs and Tucker and they’re starting their company, Spectral Sightings, and they are now living at her home. They’re like her two sons, her two bad sons [laughs].”

Insidious: Chapter 4 will invite moviegoers back into The Further on October 20th, 2017. Aquaman director James Wan, one of the franchise’s founding fathers, is attached to produce alongside Jason Blum, Oren Peli and Whannell.
